n-stream and last.fm

Posted by: Phage on 15 August 2013

I've been seriously thinking about to enter the interesting world of streamers and buy NDX. Normally I stream music using PC and Foobar2000. With this kind of setup I am easilly able to "scrobble" my music to last.fm (I presume that this service is familiar with most of the fellow board members). Should I move to NDX and start streaming music directly from my NAS via n-stream application, can I still get my songs to scrobble e.g. does n-stream have an inherent support for last.fm?

Not sure about nStream but the Android equivalent, Bubbleupnp, does integrate with Last FM scrobbling. Also integrates with a lyric display app .

Unfortunately I do not have any personal experience on this but I assume that the situation with Last.FM is the same as concerning Spotify (there are number of threads about the workarounds people have used to get that work).

Naim knowledge base says:

Last.FM is not currently natively supported by your Naim network player (though we are always looking at ways to improve our offerings).

If you use Windows, UPnP servers such as Jamcast have a ‘virtual soundcard’ mode, which can transmit whatever is being played on your computer, and which can then be received by your Naim network player as if it were a music server.

Full article can be found here. Hope this helps. Has your dealer any idea or suggestion how to proceed with this matter?

Thanks, I look into that article this evening. I refrain commenting this dealer issue, I simply say that an equal sign between local dealers and the ones in the Naim homeland can't be directly drawn.

Edit: it seems that I still need a computer to scrobble via the NDX which isn't exactly I had i mind. I sincerely hope that n-stream engineers would look into the possibility to get this great service integrated directly to the software.

Phage, understood (about the dealers) I have similar opinion. However, sometimes they surprise you.

Hi Phage,

As I'm sure you know already, you'll need a computer/NAS to serve the music anyway. Thus Last.fm scrobbling could (and should) be done on the UPnP server's side, not by n-Stream. The server knows what's being played/served and could easily be made to scrobble last.fm through alredy existing APIs (just like Spotify has been doing for ages).

Alas, I don't think Naim's software devs are interested in these "insignificant" features (eg. Airplay). Otherwise UnitiServe would've scrobbled for years already...

The could be indeed the case, murkku. Then again, last.fm users are not any minority group any more, we are counted in tens of millions. NAS is in the house, but the idea was to migrate away from the computer. Since n-stream, via iphone, is the software fetching the data from the server (NAS in this case), it could easily push the metadata information to the last.fm servers just as Spotify, Dreezer and countless other software are currently capable of doing.

I feel you.

Sad thing is the protocols and APIs are there already, for free I might add. Even tiny "garage companies" are exploiting them with great results and our beloved Naim seems to be stuck with their thumbs up their inputs. Makes no sense...

And for the haters: Every feature could and should be optionally enabled/disabled in the setup menu.
