Reel to Reel Equipment at Abbey Road Recording Studios

Posted by: TomCat William on 18 August 2013

I was very lucky to be asked to add some backing brass at the Abbey Road recording studios a while for some "Belgian Pop Music" by a guy called Flip Kowlier.

On the way out though I took this image of some of Abbey Roads Reel to Reel equipment in a hallway that I thought was interesting.

Hi TCW

I visited AR back in March and was able to take some pics of various old machines (all bigger in Flickr - click on the pics). The date back to 1947. A lot of this stuff still works and is occasionally used (the Studer was used by My Bloody Valentine for mastering their last album).

Are you a professional session musician?

Hi Kevin

Not a professional, just a lucky amateur in the right place at the right time. I really liked your pictures, especially the kit used in Studio 2 for some of the Beatles tracks as thats where we were, I love all that history.

Thanks TCW. It certainly makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, being at Abbey Road. The thing that really did it for me was being able to use the sliders on the very desk the Floyd made DSOTM on!
