How to upgrade UnitiServe SSD - Instructions ??

Posted by: MichaelSch on 19 August 2013

Where do I find instructions for upgrading my UnitiServe SSD to firmware 1.7a ?

If I go to the SSD web page, go to the download section and download the 1.7a software it is followed by upgrade instructions to the HDX unit and not the SSD unit. The two are very different - the HDX has a display and tells the user what it is doing and when it is done. The SSD does not have a display ...

1) how do I see when it is done upgrading to 1.6g ?

2) what do I do then ... restart it, or insert the 1.7a firmware disc directly ?

Sorry, but this is quite unprofessional that HDX upgrade instructions are delivered for the SSD ... there must be an upgrade manual for the SSD as well ...

Have a look at the thread 'upgrading the software on a unitiserve - an idiot's guide'. That should do the trick.

+1.  It's laid-out nicely in that thread.

The ssd has a video out connection, the fact you do not have it connected does not mean its not there.

Thank you ... I tried my way through with the risk of ruining it ... it is now upgraded successfully.

But my complains to Naim remains - it is unprofessional that customers have to search through forums to get upgrade instructions - and especially when the equipment is sensitive to errors in the upgrade process where you risk making it unusable ... It can't be so that you need to be an engineer ...

Thanks, but as I just replied in another post - it cannot be so that you need to be an engineer to make an upgrade ...

Let's not get too carried away here.  It takes as much engineering skill to hook up a display to the uServe as it does to hook up a display to a PC.  Or hook up a laptop to your large screen TV.  I don't think that Naim over-engineered this particular aspect of the user experience.  And the vast majority of uServe owners get by just fine with never using an external display, myself included.  It is easy to see the software version in n-Serve itself.

As to not providing upgrade instructions specific to the uServe -- I agree wholeheartedly.  Someone 'dropped the ball' on that one.  Instructions only tailored to the HDX were not all that helpful to most uServe customers.

Bart, I agree, and I suggested to Naim that they might like to use my instructions in an official capacity. I bet there are more Serves than NDXs out there, and it really is not hard to have two sections. The nerve wracking bit is knowing what the various flashing stages mean, and when it is appropriate to reboot.

Anyway, I'm very pleased that my instructions have worked again. Maybe they should be a sticky.

You misunderstand me here ... my comment about the need of being an "engineer" in order to upgrade comes from the fact that no upgrade manual exists and you actually get a manual to different device than the one you downloaded software for.

Had the manual just been there, I would have no complains ... !
