Could not rename artist

Posted by: AndyMoss on 20 August 2013

Hi there,

I'm having a pretty despondent time with my UnitiServe at the moment. I though the cost premium was for ease of use, but I seem to be spending more time trying to get it to work that actually listening to it ...

My current problem: I ripped a CD earlier this week. It couldn't find the metadata and I decided to try re-ripping it before manually entering track info (although I did fill in the artist/ album details). After deleting it and re-ripping it and trying to name the artist it comes up with Could not name artist. Having a look at the drive the old directory is there with the old files flagged with a .DEL extension. I'm not sure why it doesn't delete them but it's obviously causing a conflict when trying to rename the new rip.

I can't find anything on the ipad app to rebuild the database and can't get a web browser connection via a laptop. And I don't have permission to delete it manually. Any ideas before I chuck it out of the window in frustration.

It's not even a great album ...

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

I also found that when I deleted an album on the UnitiServe a ‘residue’ seemed to remain. In my case an annoying empty folder remained presented with nStream for the artist whose album I had deleted. I resolved it with the desktop client. I found that there is a recycle bin available with the desktop client and the deleted album was in fact sitting in there. I deleted it for good from the recycle bin which resolved my problem, perhaps it will solve yours?

I find the desktop client to be the most reliable interface for editing data on the UnitiServe.

I hope this helps, Gav

+1 for using the Desk Top Client to do the metadata editing

Thanks for the replies. I can't get onto the desktop client as I don't have a PC or the current Mac OS. I was assured though that I didn't need any of this as the ipad version did everything. Is this not the case? I can't see why you would be able to do things on the client that it doesn't replicate.

The iPad version definitely does not do everything.  You can do more with the browser access, and even more with the DTC.

Maybe try the edits with the browser version?  Just type the IP address of your US into a browser - functionality is fairly intuitive.  Manage Music is where you can edit the meta data.  If you don't know the IP address, open the iPad app, go to the settings page and you will see it there.

I struggled to get the browser access to work with the UnitiServe, as per instructions. I seem to remember Firefox and Safari (latest versions plus Flash plugin) just errored. Chrome showed the naim background with no functionality. IE would work of a fashion.

n-Serve is pretty good but I find there are data editing functions missing or that don't work, or at least that I can't get to work.

Only the DTC seems to do everything I need. That's where I found the recycle bin.

Maybe if you attach a screen and keyboard to the back of the UnitiServe you get all of the functionality of the DTC client via the onboard interface?

Overall, I would rate the interface experience as just about 'good enough', but that might say more about me than the U/S! However, moving over from a PC running Asset to the U/S was an obvious step up in sound quality, so I forgive the 'quirkiness'.

I always rename artists, albums and tracks in the nServe app, which is miles esier than the DTC. The only time there is an issue is when the album is active in nStream. Once it's no longer active (eg in a playlist) then the nStream works every time.

Maybe emptying the recycle bin is the answer, but that needs the DTC. You really do need a PC to operate the DTC to set ans schedule backups, and to set the IP address using the set IP tool.

Thanks for the replies.

I finally got it to work via the web browser and emptying the recycle bin as suggested. Getting onto the web client wasn't easy though. This might just be my problem but if it helps others ...

I couldn't log on using the NSSRV+MAC address method from the manual. I tried connecting with the device IP address I got from the ipad app. That didn't work either. It looks like the app pads the IP address to 3 digits e.g. 196.168.002.024, but by entering 196.168.2.24 it did connect.

Hooray.

I'm off for a lie down now.

Thanks again.

Hurrah. At some point, set its IP address to something like 140 as the last three digits. Do this at the router and using the set IP tool. It will all be more stable. Do the same for the streamer and the backup drive.
