Setting up Synology NAS

Posted by: Jasom on 27 August 2013

Hi there,

I jjust bought the DS 213+ and have managed to get everything set up except the raid configuration in the storage manager. When I go to the Create tab, it is greyed out. Status says it is verifying the hard disks in the background. Is this the reason? Do I need to wait until that is done.

Sorry this is not Naim specific but I know there are some experienced Synology users on here.

Kind Regards

Hi Jason,

If you have 2 drives installed I believe the Synology will default to Raid 1, it did on mine at least. If you see just one volume in storage manager then it is OK.

Do all my Flac files have to go into a specific folder in order for the Naim Uniti Qute to be able to stream them? Somebody mentioned that Media Server sets up three folders.

Hi Jasom,

No, I think the reference to 3 folders was in relation to the Naim ripper such as HDX/Unitiserve, where 3 folders are created automatically when a Music store is created. The folders are HQ, MQ and LQ. WAV files are ripped to MQ and (recently) mp3 to LQ.

The Naim streamers/servers can see all files on your network and present them as a single library irrespective of the folder contents or location.

Yes the Media server does set up 3 folders:- music photo & video. When I look at my Nas on my ND5XS it shows these 3 shares. Not sure if you can use other shares with Media server but can't see a reason you would NEED to anyway? Just copy your collection into the music share & get listening!

cheers

In the system settings (I translate this from the german synology GUI, so the wording may be different) you can click on the "media indexing service" icon (Medienindizierungsdienst). Here you can add other directories and set checkboxes if they are scanned for music, photos or videos. But I have not tried this as one "music" folder is enough for me.

If it's a folder to be shared, you must be sure to set it up as a "shared folder," not just a "folder."

And once you create a new "shared folder," you cannot simply right-click on it and change its properties (such as giving full read/write permission). You must go into the Control Panel and in there open the 'shared folders' tool. (I think it's called 'shared folders' in the Control Panel -- I'm not at home so cannot be sure.)  This part was very confusing to me for a while!
