Sb Duet and HD music files

Posted by: musfed on 10 February 2011

We're a little confused. We got an american ip-adress (hotspotshield) so we can download (buying of course) HD music files with a Dutch internet provider.
We tried this last week, loaded the files on a USB and played the music. Excellent, the HD light on my nDac works! (Except for Aiff files....which the nDac does not play from the USB but that's another subject.....)
Now we loaded the files on our Qnap and played them through our Squeezebox Duet. Darn, the HD light is broken and the sound is different.
Looking into the file-info, the Duet seemes to convert the file from 1411kbps into 705 kbps.

What's happening here? Did we hit another weak link: the Duet?

The best the Duet can manage is 24bit 48kHz so the current version of Squeezecenter downsamples using sox.  Earlier versions just truncated. Of course, you may also have squeezecenter settings that transcode to something worse - you need to check. Settings > Filetypes. Remember also that by default WAV gets streamed as FLAC. Another useful thing you might want to do is turn on logging and look into the log file to see what's happening .. Or buy a Squeezebox Touch which can manage 24/96. Or a Linn Sneaky which can do 24/192 .. Or .. Or ..

So, that's the punishment, we've got to upgrade again.... Choices.
From SB Duet, having a nDac and Nas. Does Naim provide a solution?

Loads of Naim options .. an HDX, an NDX, a Unitiserve, a Unitiqute .. loads  of money too. And none just do straightforward streaming like you are used to with the Duet - you get extra functionality that you may not want. How many hi-res files have you got? And are you sure you have Squeezecenter configured optimally?

Overlooked the option of the Squeezebox touch. Seemes to do the trick.
Tnx for the tip.
We're getting more and more hi-res files. Promising format.
