This shouldn't happen, should it

I have been suffering very frequent drop outs/disconnections since using my Qute as a dedicated streamer, whilst being connected to the router via Ethernet cable. Out of frustration, and ignorance, I disconnected the Ethernet, and screwed back in the high gain antenna. Well, guess what, 2 hours later, not one single drop out.

It goes against what my limited knowledge, but right now  everything is perfect.

Any thoughts anyone??

I have experienced glitches on RJ45 interconections. I'd be very surprised if it was the wired network itself.

Nonetheless, I very much like wifi as I HATE cables. Wifi works perfectly for me. And if it also does so for you, go and dump the cable!

Hi Pink H, the Ethernet cable scenario is not an issue as it is hidden under the wood flooring, so not visible. I am just surprised at the outcome, and to my ears no noticeable loss in sound quality.

Would you Adam n Eve it!!

Why should wifi sound worse than wired?

Only badly engineered and shielded wifi modules will emmit enough radiation to interfere with the analouge section of the equipment.

Apart from that both LAN and wifi are either 'works' or 'doesn't work' implementations. There are no in betweens.

Justin, does sound strange.. I would look at the connecting switches .. clearly there is something not quite right.. But if wifi is working then great.

The thing to watch with wifi, is that it can work one day and be intermittent on another, so if streaming hidef, then best use a dedicated wifi SSID just for streaming.

Unfortunately with data networks, even humble home network, it is not black and white, performance comes with lots of shades of grey.. But then I am not complaining, it keeps me in a job :-)

Justin,
Its possible you were still using the wireless connection and the drop-outs were caused becasue you removed the antenna.

If I remember correctly, when you power up the unit it checks if there is an ethernet connection, if not it then defaults to wireless. If you want to use Ethernet at some point later you would need to power down, plug in the Ethernet cable, and then re-power.

Was this what you did, or did you just plug an Ethernet cable in after using the wireleless for a while?
Don't really know why you can't switch in the menu though, that would seem much simpler.

Thanks Simon (and Simon-I-S) good point, I didn't turn the unit off, so maybe that explains the poor performance. All still working perfectly.

Thanks for the feedback.

With my previous NDX and the current NDS I have exactly the same drop-out problem for hi-res web radio stations (stations not exceeding 128Mbps are fine). If I switch to wi-fi then no drop-outs whatsoever. I recently changed from a 10/100 switch to a gigabit switch but same problem persists, so I don't think the switch is the cause.
