n-serve on mac keeps crashing?

Posted by: heihei on 17 September 2013

I've just upgraded my U/S software to 1.7a and at the same time upgraded the n-serve app on both my imac and macbook pro. Problem is that neither app now works, and simply crashes on opening. Rebooting macs and shutting down U/S doesn't solve the problem.

U/S works via web-based interface.

Any ideas?

Hi...Hei, (are you Norwegian or Danish?).

Sorry, I can't help you out here because I have been concerned about these issues myself, so I have not upgraded my u-Serve or my ND5 through fear of complete audio Armageddon. However, I am using the latest apps to run the u-Serve from both an I Phone 4S and a I Pad mini (1year behind current firmware release) and to run the ND5 ( currently 2 firmware releases behind) and all seems to be running smoothly.

I had considered taking the u-Serve back to my dealer to update as it is so far behind and I did not fancy the potential hassle. This tactic could also be self defeating in the end as I suspect that at some point in the future the app releases will be so far ahead that any coherent dialogue between the various devices will not be possible.

Someone will come along and give you some good advice I am sure.

Jason.

Heihei,

I upgraded my uServe, and nServe on OS X has been working just fine for me.  By best suggestion is to uninstall and reinstall nServe again.

Let us know if that helps,

Bart

I tried reinstalling n-serve but still the same problem. The fact that it happens on both the MacBook and iMac suggests its either an app problem or a u/serve problem. My worry is the latter related to the 1.7a firmware update.

The N-Serve OSX app crashes all the time on my macbook. As not many people seem to be reporting the same problem I wonder whether it is an OSX version problem - I'm still using Snow Leopard. Is anyone using the app on Snow Leopard without problems?

Cheers,

Tim

Phil is looking into it. They have had a few people report this as an issue. I'll report back when I hear something.

Thanks heihei,

For what it's worth, I've just installed Mountain Lion and the N-Serve app no longer crashes.

Hi,

Do those that experience the issue have both Ethernet and Wifi connected to their network?

Posted on: 08 October 2013 by heihei

TJ - yes. U/S & NAS drive and Freeview box connected via ethernet, everything else via wifi.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. Your mac, is that connected with both Ethernet and wifi at the same time?

In the system that I saw that exhibited this same problem the Mac had a wired connection to the router but also had wifi switched on. The network was very unstable as a result of this and n-Serve and many other applicatyions on the mac were having a very tough time. Switching off wifi and using Ethernet only (or removing the ethernet cable and only using Wifi) fixed the problem

No - both imac and macbook are both connected wifi-only.

Similarly with a U/S and NAS connected via Ethernet and using two different MacBooks with the n-serve app.  The MacBooks are WiFi only and the app crashes all of the time.  Both MacBooks use Snow Leopard.  Could this be the problem?

Are you (attempting to, even unknowingly) to connect to the uServe with BOTH copies of nServe at the same time?  If so, this can be a source of problems; the system seems to really only want to connect to ONE remote device running nServe at a time, at least for the iOS versions.  I have had 'issues' when bouncing back and forth between an iPhone and iPad each running nStream (or nServe); one or the other would crash.

Hoping this helps!

No, just have used either computer at separate times to see if one would work.  Neither would, making me think it's an app problem (or at least a problem with the app and Snow Leopard combo).  Since previous post suggested Mountain Lion worked, I'm wondering which iOS platform the app was developed for.  Is purchasing an upgrade really necessary?

Just to confirm:

The macbook is connected by wifi only.

I use either the OSX app or the iOS app, not both at the same time.

The OSX app has been running for 48 hrs without a crash since I changed from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion - I don't think that is a coincidence.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

OS X Snow Leopard was released in August of 2009, and replaced by Lion in July of 2011.  nServe for OS X was released in . . . 2012?  DEFINITELY was released well after the release of Lion.

Seems like from what I'm hearing the n-serve app for a Mac requires a higher level version of OS X.  I wonder if there is some way to get an upgrade for whatever it is that is interfering with the app for those of us who don't want to purchase Mountain Lion at this time.  Seems like the folks at Naim might have anticipated that not everyone purchasing their devices would have Mountain Lion .

Ok - The NServe app just quit unexpectedly after two-and-a-half days so it would appear to be more stable with Mountain Lion but still not entirely stable.

Hmm - was on the verge of upgrading to Mountain Lion last night. Perhaps I should just wait to see what Naim come back with.

Looks like this has been fixed with the latest release of the n-Serve app. Only able to test briefly this morning but no problems so far.

I've actually been having n-Serve crashing issues under Mavericks the past 2 days -- didn't notice that a new version was released 2 days ago.  n-Serve seemed to keep losing then re-gaining connection to my uServe very rapidly . . . then it'd crash.  Nothing else changed in my system or network recently.

Will see if the Nov. 9 release solves my issue.

I did install the free upgrade to Maverick and have been using the n-Serve app for over a week without any problems.  Without understanding what the problem was before, seems like that upgrade has fixed things.

Hi Bart,

I'd be interested to know whether you experience the rapid connect/disconnect problem on both the IOS and OSX (Mountain Lion in my case) NServe apps simultaneously. That's something I've experienced several times over the last few weeks and I end up having to re-boot the UServe to sort it. It is as though the UServe has network connectivity problems but as I can look at it with Finder when the apps can't connect properly there must be something else going on - I'm inclined to suspect the UServe rather than the apps.

I don't think this is related to the OSX app problem discussed above - the new version seems to be very solid.

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Tim -- in the brief time I was seeing this, the OS X app was crashing but the iOS app seemed to be running fine and staying connected.

After updating the OS X app and rebooting my uServe, so far all is fine.
