Simon Peston Bach Organ works

Posted by: Dozey on 18 September 2013

Hi All, I am wanting to get a survey of Bach's organ works. I have some discs by Simon Preston that I enjoy (his playing can be vivacious). Is his set worth getting? As an alternative I was considering the Peter Hurford set. Any input gratefully received.

I have Preston's complete Bach organ works boxed set (currently going for about £30-40 on certain well known websites) and it's very good indeed. Penguin Guide also rates it very highly, if that means anything to youI haven't compared it to the Hurford, which I imagine will be similarly good, but I definitely haven't found anything to disappoint me in the Preston. They were recorded from about 1988-2000 on various European organs. There aren't any jarring shifts in sound from one organ/location to another, which I think is a good thing, though others may disagree.

Ultimately, when it works out at less than £2.50 per disc, there's an extent to which you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the comments Ebor. I think I will have to buy it at that price.
