Uprading source from NDX/XPS-DR

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 25 September 2013

As I contemplate a source upgrade from the NDX/XPS-DR, would it be better to

a) Get a NDS and use it with the XPS-DR - or -

b) Get a 555 and use it with the NDX.

I would have to sell the XPS-DR, but could use the NDX in a second system...

-- or should I seriously leave it alone and upgrade my speakers first? - still running Rega RS5s.

Amplification is 282/250/HiCapDR.

Why do you need to upgrade. You seem to change things around regularly. What's not working for you ?

NDS would be better with a lesser supply than the NDX with a 555PS but is it really going to do what you want it to given your box swapping ?

c) nDAC/XPS-DR

Best option IMHO, also from a VFM perspective.

Well, I've done a lot of box swapping over two years trying to hold on to my NaitXS - now that I'm free of it I'm settling into a system nicely.

I could do nothing I would be perfectly happy, but just curious..

Ah ok. Good luck

I tried those Regas once and thought they were dreadful; bass heavy and the build quality of a cereal packet. Some better speakers would be my choice. Re the source, NDS/XP5XS is reputedly better than NDX with any power supply, though I've never heard them so cannot comment from first hand experience.

I really liked the DB1i, so maybe I'll try to listen to the GB1i before making any further changes to amplification.

I didn't like 20.23 too much...

I have not heard the new 23s. I had the chance, but they were out of my price range, hence the GB1. They have taken ages to open up and are now so much better than I thought they would ever be. I have not heard the other Forum favourites such as the various Kudos speakers, such as the Super 10 and 20, which may be worth investigation. Of course, the SL2 would be worth seeking out, but they really warrant amps such as 252/300, which is doubtless a step too far.

I have the Kudos X2 in the study and they sound excellent there - don't want to change anything there. Even the Harbeth P3ESRs did not work there - and they're supposed to be good for small rooms. Maybe it was the fact that the study is almost a cube.

The Kudos C2s I ran for a while didn't work at all. The bass was all over the place, even though the midrange and treble was something else...

I've had a nDac on a few ocassions at home (about three times). While it was excellent, and a clear upgrade, I just don't want to do three boxes for source...
