NDS Purchase THANK YOU
Posted by: Freightliner Mark on 29 September 2013
I would just like to say a massive THANK YOU to NAIM for the fantastic NDS.I have had it for 3 weeks now and I am very impressed. Another THANK YOU to the people who contributed to the NDS appreciation thread which I read with great interest.
A final THANK YOU to Moorgate Acoustics in Sheffield who helped me massively along the streaming route.
Very happy (For now)
Congratulations and best wishes with it. I could start gushing (again). Suffice to say I know where you are coming from.
Have fun. Or more fun.
Congratulations Mark, and welcome to the forum!
Agreed 100% on the NDS -- it's a wonderful network player. When you get a chance, you might want to update your profile and tell us about the rest of your setup. Pics are always welcome too!

Mine should be with me in a week or two. Started off with bare NDX and then added 555DR.
I wonder how many have come to the NDS from a CD player and how many from another streamer?

CDX2/XPS2, then DAC/XPS2 with CDX2 and HDX running side by side. Then just the DAC/XPS2/HDX. It took a long time for me to let go of CD replay but I was convinced at an early stage, just not ready to break old habits. The NDS was a take it or leave it curiosity. And we took it. In fact, we bought the demo unit that came home for audition. That's how much I didn't want to give it back.
My journey was Naim CD5 -> Slim Devices Transporter -> Added a Naim DAC -> Added a 555PS DR -> Replaced the Transporter and DAC with an NDS.
Very pleased with the final solution
The NDS was a bit of a game changer for us. For what it is worth, we went from CD3.5/FC as a largely unused second source behind our LP12 to streaming through my 'Qute as a source. That pretty much convinced me that the CDP could go, it had been here more than a decade. We then ran ND5SX/NDAC/XPS2 (and occassionally a DVD5) until the NDS arrived (I could not get on with the NDX/XPS2 and/or ND5SX/XPS2 or the bare streamers) at which point the NDAC and ND5SX were disposed of in favour of NDS/XPS2.
The NDS is a phenomenal bit of kit. We use it more than our beloved LP12 now, and I expect to start to move slowly to a predominantly digital future (not parting with the LP12 though). I have a 555PS DR and a bunch of additional fraim coming on Saturday so we will be bidding the XPS2 a tearful farewell.
Congratulations on the purchase of your new NDS: I hope that n-Stream will inspire you to rediscover old recordings that you once cherished.
Best regards,
Minh
I could not get on with the NDX/XPS2 and/or ND5SX/XPS2 or the bare streamers
Why was this? What are the differences you noticed between the NDX and NDS?

In my setup and room I found it hard to distinguish between the NDX and ND5SX feeding the NDAC/XPS2, so I went with the ND5SX. However, I found the bare ND5SX a little harsh, or brittle for want of better description. I'm not too good at describing the effect, but the bass was a tad shallow and the overall presentation a tad too upfront. Ditto for the NDX. The NDS/XPS2 has a richer, fuller more relaxed way of presenting music. We were happy to trade in the DAC and ND5SX and move on to the NDS. We had a fairly length home demo with the 555PS DR and were very reluctant to hand it back to our dealer. Thankfully the new kit arrives here in the morning.
I suspect that we are not going to be tinkering with the main system again in the near future......Although I do fancy a new cartridge.......or maybe a Karmen....
My NDS/XPS2 is barely one week old and it is so far ahead of NDAC/XPS2 it is not even funny.
Absolutely breathtaking.
Thank you Naim! This is my best black box by far and truly a landmark product.
