555PS - spare socket used to power CDX2?

Posted by: rjstaines on 30 September 2013

Here's a question for those who have two 555PS's driving their NDS...  can I use output 1 of the 555 that's driving the digital part of the NDS (thro socket 2) to drive an HDX or (more likely) a CDX2 or CDS3 as well?

So that's 555 #1  output 1 to NDS analogue (input 1).   Second 555 output 2 to NDS digital (input 2)  and 555 #2 output 1 to HDX/ CDX2 or CDS3.

... or will that create one almighty earth loop hum or even worse !

This may seem a stupid question, however I'd like to add a decent CD player to my system at some point and if I have a 'redundant' hi quality power source available in the form of the 'digital' 555PS, so much the better.  ( I already have an SXPS burndy left over from a previous upgrade.)

If anyone's mad adventurous enough to try this, I'd appreciate their feedback, but please note, this doesn't constitute an offer to fix anything that goes bang.

No, AFAIK this is not recommended and shouldn't be attempted.

The outputs from the sockets are not as simple as you may believe.

While there may be the required voltages supplies unused - they are split over the 2 PSs. Obtaining them would be a nightmare, possibly involve damage and probably do such bizarre things to the careful earthing arrangements of a Naim system that your hair would turn green.

In addition - such a parasitic attachment would work against the benefits gained by using 2 x 555PS.

Not that I didn't trust Richard's answer, Adam, but you too make a good point... especially about my hair turning green.  At my age, any colour other than grey is to be avoided at all costs...

...so I've decided, on balance, to shelve this idea (for now)

One 555PS for the NDS and the other for the CDX2 would be a gracious plenty, for occasional use at least.  Is the single on the NDS that much of a step back?

Single 555PS on NDS a big step back? Yes.
