This is a regular topic I know, but technology and times change quickly in Komputerweltland.
I'm deliberating on upgrading my PC/NAS ripping & serving set-up. PC is old, tired and sick and may fall apart if moved. NAS is new and would work well as a backup device for something a bit more 'bespoke'. I rip using dBPowerAmp to WAV and store/serve from a little 2TB Western Digital NAS.
Leaving aside the UnitiServe/HDX route, are there any other manufacturers offering value and performance?
I have seen the ZoneRipper, VortexBox, RipNas products and would like something full-width if poss. The ZoneRipper looks good but is so deep it could fall off the edge of the world, Vortexbox seems to be available on-line only so can't hear it/feel it like the ZoneRipper, RipNas is more expensive.
Ideally I'd like to operate dBPowerAmp/Asset, 1TB of primary storage, have a full-width black box with the ability to act as a CD transport. So any words of advice or experience would be appreciated, cheers.

As I said my current PC is out of date and out of time (nearly). I don't understand what you mean by my 'favourite ripper', I only have one way to do it at present (the PC). I don't want my new living room to look like a junk shop, or have to be inventive in hiding the junk I've already got! What's XLD?

And gratefully received Wat, I was just a bit unsure of some of your terminology, and as I've never owned anything Mac oriented it was somewhat difficult to visualise. Vortexbox gets an endorsement, thanks!

I asked a question about ripnas before settling on the UnitiServe; you may want to search it out - 'is a ripnas any good?'
I settled in the end for a Serve. It works well, integrates perfectly and is fully supported by Naim should anything to wrong. It all works without a computer anywhere to be seen, except once to set up the backup arrangements. The nServe app works really well to sort out genre etc.

I think that the two poles are (1) buy a new computer, or (2) buy a uServe.
If you have a solution that worked well, except for the aging of the computer, why not just update (replace) the computer?
