Agnes Obel

Posted by: Gaius: Tangerine on 23 October 2013

What a night.  Monday 21 October 2013.

The enchanting Agnes Obel at  Union Chapel, Islington, London.

If you don’t know her but like those haunting melancholic vocals from the likes of Liz Fraser, Hope Sandoval, Isobel Campbell and Kate Bush you will simply fall in love with her as I have.

In my mind she is the new queen of this style and her execution live was beyond reproach.

So much so both myself and my old mucker Derek Jenkins were at a loss to recall a better concert.

I cannot recommend her music highly enough and if you get a chance to see her live you will be in for such a treat words simply fail me.

Just exquisite.

Regards,

Mark

PS:  A big thank you to James at Tom Tom Audio who introduced us to this incredible artist.

Thanks Gaius ; her upcoming album Aventine can be streamed from her website. Her piano work immediately brings to mind Ludovico Einaudi, with whom I see that she has collaborated.

As you say, enchanting. I can only imagine a live concert.

Jan,

Remis of me not to mention her stunning piano work.

The live concert really was like no other.

I am under her spell.

You are most welcome Jan.

I know exactly what you mean and I can't wait to see her again next year.

Do check out her first album, Philharmonics, it's equally as good, better in some ways.

I have had bad luck with the vinyl and would suggest the Delux CD version.

She has been my most played artist this year and I rate Aventine as 2013's best release.

On a hunch, I checked her concert schedule and - as proof that the stars do sometimes align - she's playing in February during Montreal's annual Montréal en lumière festival. Her first date sold out in about two days, but she has added a second show on the 25th, and ....

Fantastic, you are in for a real treat.

I will be at The Barbican in London in April.

Cheers,

Agnes Obel played here last night, bringing much needed relief to the drudgery of our winter. There is something indescribable about her music that reaches far back into Scandinavian roots ; it took me to some very deep places and is resonating strongly this morning. Still under the spell…

Don’t miss her !

The opening act was Erin Lang (Feral and Stray). I tried really hard, but it was just painful...  Worth missing.

Just arrived from her show. GREAT concert !

Don't miss it.

I'm still enchanted. Her voice, her quiet energy and Anna Müller plays cello in a wonderful way.

I'll remember that concert for a long time

Hi Serge,

Glad to hear that you got hold of tickets finally. The Palais Montcalm is a great venue.

BTW, Tommy Emmanuel will be playing there on May 26. If you don't know him (and like guitar) prepare to knocked out ! Another not-to-be-missed concert.

Thanks Jan,

Don't know Tommy Emmanuel but I'll certainly check that out.

BTW, I'll be at Brad Mehldau Trio's concert on april 27 at Palais Montcalm. If you like that kind of performer, he will be at Montreal jazz festival on first of july (solo concert).
