n-stream slow on ipad
Posted by: happygiraffe on 26 October 2013
Hi, when I use n-stream from iPad 2, it reacts very slowly to inputs and takes some time to load album pictures or lists. No problem when I use n.stream from iphone 5.
Does anyone know why?
thanks
Giovanni
Hi, I have a very similar problem. I also have an earlier version of the iPad which I use with with an ND5 XS. The app frequently freezes for significant periods of time. I had put it down to the fact that I vave a 1st generation iPad and so am locked into an old version of the OS. This issue significantly reduces the streaming experience for me.
Incidentally, I also have a Linn Klimax Renew DS in a 2nd system. Overall, I possibly just prefer the n-stream app design, but the Linn Kinsky app performs flawlessly with no lags whatsoever on my iPad, my Android phone and on my Desktop PC.
Is this problem down to my elderly OS or is this a generic problem with n-stream?
I should also have mentioned that I am using UPnP with a Synology DS212 NAS,and using the Synology Media Server.
Hi Giovanni -
Try clearing nStream's cache.
ATB.
Hook
Thank you, Hook. It's definitely faster, even if there are still lags from time to time but acceptable after all.
Hi Giovanni, the cache clear can help slightly but unlikely to be the main cause. I use an iPad 1 with iOS 5.1.1 and Nstream is really zippy .. The latest version 3.4 being the fastest ever.. It will load a 1000 albums in about 7 seconds from empty ( using the green progress bar on the bottom of Nstream - it's quicker if cached )
The main element that determines the responsiveness is the upnp server and the connectivity to it. I use Asset upnp server and have it seperate from my various NASes.. and have my ipad version 1 access it via a dedicated wifi network using an Apple Airport Express wireless access point . With that Nstream is rock solid and fast.. Unlike my NDX which needs the odd power cycle with the current slightly buggy firmware.
But remember Nstream is really like a specialist web browser.. It's performance is mostly determined by the upnp web server.

Hi Hook & Simon, thanks for your advice. The issue may in some cases be a combination of cache and UPnP effectiveness, but in my case clearing the cache has resolved my problem completely. The n-stream app is now a joy to use. Many thanks.
Harry
Harry glad its working for you.. If you have had cache issues it's worth clrearing the album art cache as well as the index cache if not done so already

Err.... 3.5 is the latest version. Loads album data very quickly Using MinimServer upnp. Occasional minor probs when alternating between ipod and ipad but otherwise ok... But not great in terms of usability. Haven't upgrade NDXfirmware to 3.21 because of widely reported bugs.
Cache clear was just a temporary fix. Today n-stream was again very slow...
I'm not sure it's a matter of upnp server, since n-stream works flawlessly on iphone...
Err.. My bad... 3.5 indeed appears to be the latest version, I lost track, but works a charm here on iOS 5.1.1.
Currently running no problems with Asset on a WHS mini server, and miniDLNA on the RasperberyPi
