Are you an "audiophile"?

Apart from the fact that my house is still standing, I think that article was actually about me!
I'm now going to lock myself back in my listening room with my cake until the next Sade album is released.
Oi ! I resemble that remark - lol. Skinny, receding, grey stubble and all

There's nowt wrong with Sade. Now, if you were waiting for the 249th release of DSOTM........

And there was me thinking you were dissing Hayling's finest.
A very true and well informed write-up of yours that, Kev?
I wondered which paper you worked for
Debs
Wish that I had written it Debs...
What,no mention of coving?

Funny story.
Makes me think about how i got into it, and the fact that i do it for me, and my own pleasure alone. HIFI will never make status symbols like cars or watches for example.
Every now and then one of my friends ask me why and how, and i try the same "lame story" they don't get it, they all like it but don't get it.
I have friends who aren't into HiFi who do understand when I play them some music on my system. They suddenly turn into kids in a sweet shop with my record collection.
I don't ever discuss my system with friends, "demonstrate" it to them, nor in any way whatsoever act as if they might be the slightest bit interested. I know that they overwhelmingly couldn't care less about my posessions. I will play music in the background if we are entertaining, but I really don't care what they think about my semi-hobby. I geek out only on this forum.
Winky, that's precisely my approach. Geek out - I like that!
And mine.
I have a real audiophile friend (the type that owns ten different recordings of Bach's Cello Suites and would rather die than have any two pieces of equipment by the same brand, unless of course they're from Mark Levinson) who has completely ceased considering my system since I sold my CDX2, the only thing I had he liked.
He's a real audio nut, but when he comes along he simply ignores that there's a stereo going on. I find this rather refreshing.

This reminds me about the guy who owned Oracle turntable and Cello Palette preamp which in that time had five CDs and twelve LPs. I asked him which CDs he had and he answered me "the albums are from you know that American singer". Only after a minute or so he recall that it was Elvis Presley. I've been told by a friend who visited him to listen to his system and "audiophile" didn't let him even touch his gear. My friend couldn't believe when he saw "audiophile" touching his gear with white gloves.
Harsh..........but fair.
You're right Max. Who else remembers Peter Belt?
Although every night I kneel in front of my collection of black boxes and worship them for a few minutes, I really wish they weren't so conspicuous to visitors. I dread the question "So what's all that lot then?"
My strategy in answering this question varies on the individual concerned and varies from "It's a type of iPod" to "I'll happily explain what it all does but you'll be bored out of your skull in five minutes".
Those outside the usual loony hi-fi types who have a listen are inevitably gob-smacked but then comes the other dreaded question "So how much does this stuff cost?" I'll try and deflect this away by waffling on about it being mostly second-hand or ex-demo (true), but if you do get pushed into revealing the prices it's amazing how swiftly folk lose interest...
Dont in anyway consider myself an audiophile. I will watch TV most nites if their is something on worth watching. If the TV is crap then i will put on some music and read a book.
Of late i am doing a lot more reading and listening to music. What does that tell you about whats on TV these days.

Well said Tony.
That pretty much sums up my experience of this 'daft hobby' of ours! Don't even get me going trying to explain why I still buy vinyl
