Mahler Symphony No. 1 recommendation - High Res

Posted by: sailorck on 02 November 2013

I absolutely enjoy Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 (Titan). The CD-rip I listen to is conducted by Leonard Bernstein (Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, 1999, Deutsche Grammophon). Could you recommend another version, preferably a high-res download version?

I cannot recommend it to you as I haven't heard it, but FWIW you may find this one on Qobuz that was awarded a Diapason d'Or (highest distinction) by the French magazine Diapason:

Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer (Channel Classics, 2012) [24/192]

If you have a SACD-player or can rip SACD, Jonathan Nott with his Bamberger Symfonie on the Tudor label, was elected Gramophone Editor's Choice.

like maurice, I haven't heared this one.

Sailrock,

I'm not 'into' Mahler myself (on the first, why would anyone compose a funeral march to a children's song, a perverted version of Frère Jaques - it may be parody or grief, but I can't find myself to accept it), but I can recommend Chailly's recording with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Not highres but superlatively recorded, and in terms of interpretation (lean, but full-bodied) a good supplement to Bernstein.

For non-highres recording the Audite recording from Kubelik from 1979 is well regarded as very true to the character of the piece, though some say its not as they would like to hear it.
