Water.....how much of it do you drink ?

Posted by: mista h on 04 November 2013

Just catching up with reading my daily newspaper....like last thusdays.

Article on a female who for 1 month drank 3ltrs of water a day. At the end of this she reckons she looks 10 years younger(new glasses pls),feels better, fitter, slimmer etc, etc. She was also told it was helpful for her kidneys.

Defo one for our docs this !!

Not too much as it can flush out some chemicals you actually need. I was advised to have a large quaff 1/2  to 3/4 of a pint before sleeping to help stop leg cramps and same in the morning to start the systems up again.

As to the 3 litre a day lady, it was probably all the exercise she got walking to the loo!

Most water anyone needs is provided by what he/she eats.

Drinking additional litres of water is not at all healthy.

Too much water can kill you. As has happened to some clubbers who indulge in ecstasy (not me of course) and overdose on water to keep hydrated.

A good guide is to look at the colour of your urine.

Water is good for you. I drink about 2-3 litres a day. I don't drink tea or coffee and only have juice in the morning. I do have the occasional soft drink so I'm no saint. 'Normal' people who do drink tea or coffee are probably drinking similar volumes.

I started drinking plenty of water after I developed renal colic due to a urate stone in the autumn of 1976. I'd been doing a manual job in the heat of the summer of '76 and hadn't been drinking enough fluid.

An easy way to tell if you need to drink more is look at your pee, as Redmire said. If it's yellow or darker then drink more. I drink more to keep hydrated in hot weather and during exercise. The most important thing is to prevent dehydration before it happens.

Water is good for you and should be drunk in addition to things like coffee and caffeinated soft drinks as these have a diuretic effect. From the point of rehydrating on a hot day a beer or two isn't a bad thing as it's also replacing some of the salts lost.

Yet another modern myth; the detox/drink more water nonsense. be-loved of manucturers of bottled water and nonsense detox treatments.

You need enough to be hydrated. After that you just pee it out.

If your wee is a nice clear pale yellow you are fine. if it is dark yellow/orange you need more fluid, if it is green you are in serious trouble!

...and yes water intoxication is a serious condition caused by drinking water to excess.

about 4 litters of water a day

during my workout 1,5

breakfast 0,6

during the day 1,5 / 2

in evening 0,6

I drink 3l of water a day.

6 mugs of tea accounts for 1.5l, 3 cans of lager in the evening another 1.5l.

I agree with other posters, 3l is too much. When I don't take my evening 1.5l, I feel a lot livelier in the morning.

Bruce  - since you have highlighted it what does green pee signify ?

AS an aside - if you have cataracts what you see if like looking through a yellow/green/brown filter so distinguishing the colour in the bowl is difficult - however once the cataracts are removed the colours are a wonder to behold

Good tip from Bruce about pee colour

I have a uric acid problem compounded by less than perfect kidneys.  Watching diet & fluid intake is part of life.  I drink aprx 2 to 3 litres a day of various fluids but do not get obsessive other than making sure I have some if I'm in a place that its not easily available - e.g. travel.

To Bruce's tip,  I find a pee inspection has become an automatic each & every time event & any darkening means I take a trip to the tap or fridge.

My tip of the day - look after your kidneys, they don't mend themselves - my problem was  a few years of high & undetected blood pressure. Get your blood pressure checked & talk to your GP if its a concern.

I can 2nd the fact about looking after the kidneys. Had stones a few years back,so was given lithotripsy. First session there is me lying on a water bed and what felt like soft peas being fired at me. What a doddle this is me thinks. Little did i know was that each follow up session they would up the anti. The final lot felt like they were firing 6 inch shells from a machine gun at me. Even with a pain relief injection it was not my idea of fun. In the end it was an op to get the stones removed, which was a piece of cake compared to Lithotripsy.

I now drink 2 litres of water per day, maybe one cup of coffee and that's about it. I agree with the pee test a nice pale yellow is good! Seems the more balanced my system is the better.
