Your 2014 Concerts
Posted by: Richard S on 04 November 2013
Just booked for Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth in Liverpool next May.
Anyone else have forthcoming concerts to announce? I only discovered the last Steve Hackett tour from this site, so here's hoping for more undiscovered gems.
Hope I get to hear her live. I keep missing her every time when she's in town.
Enjoy.
Who's the conductor and orchestra?
Not many live performances this year, but I did see Patricia Kopatchinskaja in Ligeti's violin concerto (she was awesome...), Ivo Pogorelich in a recital that consisted of Liszt's Dante sonata, Schumann's Fantasie, Stravinsky's scenes from Petrushka AND Brahms' Paganini variations, and earlier in the year, Maurizio Pollini in a mixed program. All were excellent evenings. If time permits, going to see Pletnev in Amsterdam.

Yikes. That's not listed in his profile.

Maybe - but Sokolov has been a more frequent guest over here, while it's quite rare to see Pletnev.

Think it is at least 8 years or more that I hear Pletnev.
Wondering a little bit that he goes back to piano. How ever, could be a nice evening.
I would love to hear them both.
Altho, Pletnev's child molestation charges still is bother some to me...
A conservative CSO would probably never want to do anything with him.
I saw yesterday evening Daniel Barenboim with Schubert sonatas In Munich. It was a very fine recital. One can of course hear that he is over the top in the more complex passages which soundEd a bit cluttered. But still his command of the more subtitle sections was very good. I was happy that I saw him at least once in my life.
Tristan und Isolde at Covent Garden last night.
Nina Stemme & Stephen Gould in the title roles & an excellent supporting cast, apart from the King Mark of John Tomlinson, who should probably be thinking of retiring from this sort of role by now.
The orchestra was on fantastic form, it is amazing how much more internal detail you hear in a live performance compared to listening on cd.
For me, music just does not get much better than this.
I would love to hear them both.

Was this rumor finally proved truth

Didn't like his kind of pianism
but Fine that it was a good evening
in which Concert Hall you listen to him?

Well, it was settled out of court so we'll never know.
I'd reckon it's the same sort of things as Michael Jackson case.
'Did he or didn't he?'

Nine Inch Nails
Robert Cray
Imelda May
The Who
Arctic Monkeys
Neil Young

A saw last night Gregory Porter and it was a great concert.
The opening act was Myles Sanko, just with piano, which was a nice start.
Gregory then took us through his repertoire so far. At the nice thing was that the numbers have not been played like on the recording or as close as possible, but with a real different take on it - with extended solos, tempo and tonal differences .....
So I really enjoyed it.

My wife and I saw his recent concert in Portsmouth but have to say the sound quality was pretty poor. The Guildhall doesn't have the best acoustics but the mixing desk seemed to be using a lot of echo. Porter's voice doesn't need audio enhancement. Shame as we were both really looking forward to it.

Dave,
Sorry to hear - the sound quality in my venue was pretty good and direct. Not a lot of echo, just a normal level. Only in the first tw songs the drums where a bit too intruding, but this got corrected within the set. Shows again how a venue and the man behind the controls play an important role in the experience.
Cheers,
Bert
On Friday night I went to a concert at the Royal College of Music. The evening's highlight was the RCM Philharmonic performing Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. Overall they played it well, albeit somewhat more deliberately paced than the very best. My reference performance is Bohm's with the VPO. I didn't expect them to match that but overall I enjoyed their performance.
Also on the programme was Japanese composer Keiko Abe’s Prism Rhapsody performed by Humphrey Leung playing the Marimba. This was a fascinating, polyrhythmic piece; at first unexpected and puzzling, as if the orchestra and Marimba were playing from completely different scores, but then developing into something quite novel to these ears and really rather delightful.
