Your 2014 Concerts
Posted by: Richard S on 04 November 2013
Just booked for Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth in Liverpool next May.
Anyone else have forthcoming concerts to announce? I only discovered the last Steve Hackett tour from this site, so here's hoping for more undiscovered gems.
Yeah me too, Robert Plant but in Leeds.
Richard
.... And Tony Joe White in Manchester next Tuesday but work may get in the way
Richard
Dolly Parton last night at the O2. Ignoring the O2 bit, she was fabulous. A wonderful show and spot on singing.
Eric Clapton - Leeds - last night
Richard
Yeah me too, Robert Plant but in Leeds.
Richard
He did a great set at Glastonbury so all looks promising for his UK tour in November.
Richard
Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel at RAH performing The Human Menagerie & The Psychomodo.
Man it was mean!!
If you live close to Stroud, Gloucester, I recommend an excellent day/night festival...
I'm really looking forward to EppyFest3, taking place next Saturday, 5th July 2014 at The Lansdown Hall in Stroud, Gloucester.

Drive-by Truckers October 19th here in Albany, New York. Looking forward to a great show.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Vancouver last night. Outstanding, (although my wife didn't enjoy it as much). The Bad Seeds are a stunning band, Warren Ellis is one of the great musicians in rock music today. Best sound quality I've ever experienced at a rock concert.
The latest album; "Push the Sky Away" has the makings of a modern classic.
(Saw this thread and decided to move this off the separate post I made last night) Just got back from Robbie's Swing both Ways concert. A memorable cabaret type big band swing show where he tried to convince us that he was an all round entertainer. Clearly he loves his adoring fans, and he does a star turn as a 21st century swinger. But, the sound was dreadful. Overblown bass, sharp tops and a muddy middle. Given that it was his 3rd night at the arena I would have thought that the sound techies could have got the eq right by now. On the other hand I normally sit very close to the stage, but this time was ocean trail but at the rear of the arena. Is this a feature of the venue, the listening position or a inadequate sound engineering?

If you were at the O2, it is just a completely and utterly crap venue for SQ. Nobody cares, though. It's like here in Vancouver where "major" acts play at the hockey rink that has the acoustics of an aeroplane hangar. Again, nobody cares. I am so glad that I pretty much depise most "major" acts and thus really never go to those concerts.

Anybody seen Tony Joe White on his UK tour as I had to miss the gig in Manchester?
Richard
Hi Winky, sorry, I forgot that my original post had the venue in the title: Manchester Phones4U (previously MEN) arena. I wondered if it was where we were sitting. When I saw Rush there, I was next to the stage: great sound. When we saw Muse we were actually behind the stage: brilliant sound: the best show I've ever been to for sheer verve, quality playing and sound. But, sitting at the far end of the auditorium for Robbie it was painfully boomy! We got comps, so I felt sorry for those who had shelled out a minimum of £70.
Saw this chap last night. Crappy iPhone photos the best I could do:
We went to the Montreux Jazz Festival on Wednesday night and saw Sohn, London Grammar, and Goldfrapp.
As expected Goldfrapp were very good..amazing voice, London Grammar were excellent, both musically and vocally and lived up to their recent album, Sohn was a first for us, interesting, esp if you like electronic melancholy.....one to watch..
Saw Dream Theater in Sheffield 5th July, got tickets for Robert Plant in Hull
Jimmy Cliff and Kymani Marley (exactly like Bob, only bigger) at the Juan les Pins Reggae Night (which precedes the Jazz Festival). Doesn't really get much more summery than that..!
Not particularly music that I'd listen to at home - and Jimmy Cliff didn't play "You can get it if you really want" (which is the only song I was absolutely sure he'd recorded if, I'm honest) - but an excellent evening of rhythm, dancing, atmosphere and passive dope-smoking...
A stunning venue and performance sadly let down by a very poor PA.
If you get a chance go see her but at the very least check out her 1st 2 albums
Richard Thompson at The Hawth, Crawley. Great gig, but our first gig since the local council gave up running The Hawth, has turned the place into a soulless profit shop. No, nada not one draft beer!!! Lager of course only bottled LP.
Fortunately the gig was stupendous as usual. Supporting the release of Acoustic Classics a sort of best of but acoustic. He was on top form, good banter, especially when he experienced equipment malfunction, a faulty mains lead. 2 smaller than DBL speakers, wall mounted were all that was used and it sounded terrific. Some new songs from a future project about WW1 , and some songs from a forthcoming "family" album, Linda,Kami,Teddy, James W and some of the younger kids.
Supported by The Rails , his daughter Kami and husband James Walbourne, as RT said nepotism will get get you everywhere.

The venue is called "Phones4U"? I guess it is no more ridiculous than the "Rogers Arena" here in Vancouver. I'd be happier if we paid for the venue costs directly through ticket prices, rather than as part of our phone bills. That way, If I don't go to a Justin Bieber concert (for example) , I'm not subsidising those that do, every time I make a phone call.
Richard Thompson at The Hawth, Crawley. Great gig, ....
We saw him supporting Emmylou Harris. He was absolutely fantastic. "Who knows where the time goes?" Indeed....

Please people, stop taking phone photos at concerts.
I've not contributed to this thread in a while, so here goes:
29th June - Calling Festival on Clapham Common - great for me as I could walk there and back. Aside from this convenience, the evening wasn't that great - couldn't get into the tent to see Gregory Porter, it was too rammed, while the snooze-inducing Jack Johnson was on the main stage. It should have been the other way round - GP was the person everyone wanted to see.
The main act was of course Stevie Wonder, who's always great value. However the gig was spoiled a bit by too many singalongs, poor sound, warm, expensive beer and by wankers from Clapham taking pictures of themselves and their shrieking girlfriends on smartphones.
The hazards of contemporary gig-going!
