Changing uPnP server on a qnap nas ( newbie alert again)

Posted by: Ingenius on 06 November 2013

Hi There

Just a short and maybe " daft " question:

My Qnap Nas came with Twonky media UPnP server already on it. Is this just softrare or hardware ( firmware) I read on this forum a lot of people having issues with Twonky. Can it be easily disabled and replaced with Asset UPnP which seems the prefered choice on this forum. ? I havent found any issues yet as i am still waiting for my Superuniti, but thought i would ask

thanks in advance

Keith

Twonky is a built-in QPKG application which you can disable on your NAS. As far as I know Asset doesn't work on an ARM based QNAP NAS. Which QNAP model do you have?

I've installed minimserver on my TS-119P II and it works much better than Twonky. The installation isn't that hard if you follow the instructions on the minimserver web site but it isn't as simple as just installing a QPKG so depending on your level of computer skills it may not be for you.

+1 for Minimserver on QNAP.

It transcodes too !

Minimserver is ok if you really must run uPNP on your NAS, but Asset is better if you have a little old windows box lying around.

Installing Minimserver is really straightforward and it seems reliable, if a little slow to index. My main gripe is how nStream interacts with it, as the album art only shows at album level, not at artist/album like Asset does.

Not a biggy I know, but it helps identification and is more aesthetically pleasing.

Asset on an old 2005 Dell pc works great for me.  IMO, much better than Synology´s UPnP.

I have been playing around with Asset for Raspberry Pi, works a treat! There is a write up in the thread on the DBPoweramp forum on how to point it at a NAS drive.

I tried Minim but found the lack of WAV tag support disappointing.
