Asset uPnP configuration issues

Posted by: Ingenius on 07 November 2013

Hi guys,

I have decided to run Asset on my laptop andI am struggling to point Asset to the folder on my Nas called "multimedia" which contains my cd rips. Its mapped as a network drive and shows up on file explorer as a network drive next to asset upmp, but when I go to the advanced settings in asset it doesn't show up in the add folder option browse window. any ideas ??

The following is on the illustrate  support page but I don't quite understand as I can already see the share in windows file explorer.  I am using windows 8 BTW

"Audio stored on NAS Devices: folders can be added from another device (such as a NAS), before doing this open the share in Windows Explorer (Windows asks for a username and password to access, check the box to remember credentials), then Asset can access this share also  (if using Asset with the Running Mode set to Local Account"

thanks in advance

Try typing in the full path to the share when you get the Windows Explorer Dialog popup.

E.g. If your nas drive is called keith and the share is called multimedia type \\keith\multimedia subistitute Keith for the name of your nas And make sure you use the double and single backslash

Hopefully this will now work as per the article you have found.

Also check the service setting, if you are running Asset as a service, the account that runs the service is important as it will be using that account to try and attach to the Nas and if you don't have a matching account on the Nas uou won't be able to connect. So do as Asset suggest and make sure that you are running Asset using the local account, which will be running as you. You can always get it running as a service later.

Good luck!

I see what you maen having tried it, apologies I shouldn't have directed you from memory! I was expecting the normal Windows file dialog.

In this dialog you should have a network option, can you browse the network, from this dialog box?

If can't you may need to turn on Network Discovery To do this

  1. Go to the Network and Sharing Center, in the control panel and then, in the left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.

  2. Click Turn on network discovery, and then click Save changes.  You may need to exoamd your view of the page by clicking on a chevron.

Now you should be able to browse the network and locate your Nas share.

Hi Richard thanks for your reply,

sorry about bothering you

Good morning
Ah well, i have tried everything i can think of and still cant get asset to see the Nas.Am running ok with my laptop and asset pointing to a local 1TB USB drive with my music on there. I guess USB 2 is fast enough for streaming.. if not i will copy the music to the laptop drive which is 1TB also.
regarding the Nas , it must be something i have done in the initial configuration of the Qnap, but for the life of me i cant see why it shows up as a share under  >computer  and  not >Network in file manager as you would expect.
Question : Is it time to wave the white flag and call in an expert and pay to get sorted ?

Keith,

Have you given any consideration to a turntable and LPs? They are damned reliable with not much of a learning curve. Likely better SQ as well.

Hi Ingenius

Your NAS drive will have sections allocated to it known as shares. This could be a share for music, a share for video, or a share marked public (for anyone's access)

You can create a shortcut to the share and allocate it a drive letter.

The assigned drive letters will appear under the "computer" tree in explorer.

The NAS and the available shares should appear under the "network" tree

You say that the NAS appears under the "computer" tree an not the "network".   Is there a drive letter assigned to the NAS under this tree ?

Hi There Fretfan,

thank you for the reply. I am not in front of it at the minute but from memory, i think the share appears under > computer tree ie Z:\\10.0.1.6\multimedia, but the Nas and the available shares do not appear under the network tree, just folders "Keith" and "public". i cant figure out why

I spent 6 hours on it last night , to be honest i am thinking of binning it and buying a unitiserve if i cant crack it over the weekend . I think the Qnap set up from the start was poor, i had to go onto their website and load the firmware before it would run.. PnP my ****

Thanks for your help

Keith,

When you open "My Computer" do you see entries under "network drives" and if so do you see the "multimedia" share you created on the NAS? If so, can you browse the contents of "multimedia" from your computer?

Bear with it, it will be worth it in the long run!

In WIndows 8 it may say "network locations" rather than "network drives"|

Hi Keith

I have a Qnap TA-112, they are not the easiest thing to set up. Are you running the up to date Qnap software? Check your permissions. Go to 'Privilege settings', then to 'Shared folders'. Under permissions, allow everyone full access to your Multimedia folder (Read & write) Also, and more importantly. make sure the 'Guest' access has 'Full Access', then apply. I didn't do that, and it caused huge problems! (Sometimes Qnap treats other computers as a 'Guest)

I'm not saying it will work, but worth checking all the permissions on your shared folders.

Regards

Easiest way would be to map a network drive in explorer and then point the software to that drive. Create a new mapping and see if that works.

I got stuck with this running on Windows 8.

The easiest solution is to stop Asset and then find a file called MediaWatchFolders.txt (In Win8 it's located at C:\Users\my_account_name\AppData\Roaming\dBpoweramp\uMediaLibrary ).

It's a simple text file so just edit it with notepad, and put each path to your music on a separate line, e.g.

M:\Music

\\MyNas\Multimedia\Music

or whatever yours is.

Restart Asset, go in to Advanced Settings and , Bingo!, your mappings are in the Audio Library box.

Click Ok, and then Refresh All, sit back and wait for audio nirvana

Thanks guys,

Latest update:

well alas I tried everything suggested above and edited the file etc But it still didn't get the music files into asset library on restart and rescan . So I have decided to stick with my laptop running Asset and the library on the USB 1TB drive connected to it as my music server set up. Its a damn sight quieter too. just need to make a regular back up.

I would like to thank all for their help in trying to resolve the issues. thankfully the Superuniti arrives tomorrow and I know the current server set up is working ( tried on a smart TV) and I would rather sit and listen to music than faff around with the Qnap.

so its Ebay for that piece of rubbish.. unless Asset gets a port over to run on Qnap hardware / software pretty soon.

thanks again

Nasty Qnap now on E-bay.. good riddance, about 20 hours of my precious time spent on that piece of junk. Will stick with my Laptop set up for now and either commission a cheap used PC with new 2 hard drives and a decent optical drive running Asset and DB power amp, hidden in a cupboard on the network.. or buy a Unitiserve

Do not touch Qnap with a bargepole.. nasty clunky Twonky Upnp built in that didnt even recognise half of my music library

bad experience folks

Some of the best people on the Forum run a SuperUniti with a UnitiServe.....

Why would they call it "Twonky", if not to tell you something. Twonky indeed.

Yes, UPnP is neither universal, nor plug and play. Not by a long shot.

Good luck with your new setup.

I wouldn't tar QNAP with the same brush as Twonky.

IME QNAP is a good, solid, reliable nas server, whereas Twonky is, err, wonky.

Hi there

Yes I don't doubt that may be so , but Qnap are bundling Twonky with the NaS that I bought and not doing themselves any favours,, Still onward and upward
