Massive Attack Re-Issue Mezzanine on Vinyl!
Posted by: Paul@HiFi Lounge on 12 November 2013
It's true!
Ordered mine yesterday : )
Debs
I bought Mezzanine on LP in 1998 when it came out.
To my shame I don't believe I have played it yet. I remember the reviews were mixed.
Is it any good? Should I get it out?
if it were me, i'd get it out, clean it on the RCM,
put it in a new poly-paper inner-sleeve,
and then put it back on the shelf for a few more years
but that's me
I purchased Heligoland 3xLP set in April 2010,
and played it for the first time last week,
and realised it is a really good album!

it is one of my favourite albums so I would definitely give it a spin, the original release goes for quite a lot of money now, that is one of the reasons why I was relieved to see the re-issue, you are sitting on a pretty good investment there, maybe you should keep it unplayed and just buy the re-issue

YES! YES! AND AGAIN YES!

I'll have what he's having!
Seriously though, it's a brilliant album @MrClick.
I bought it on vinyl when it first came out 15+ years ago and was struck by how dark it was compared to "Protection" and "Blue Lines".
My favourite track was always "Inertia Creeps", with its Can samples. But "Risingson", "Angel", "Black Milk", "Exchange" and the title track are all masterpieces, as well as, of course, "Teardrop". One of the three or for best albums of the 1990s for sure.
Those of you who've ordered it on vinyl are in for a treat (assuming they haven't done a Jimmy Page and screwed everything up) - it sounds FANTASTIC on the black stuff.
That's a relief, I have the 1998 vinyl
I knew I was , but I didn't realise I was HIP!

Denis, you might be rich too. Mint first presses go for £100+
Its mad some of these 90s records go for money like that. I have a copy of Beautiful Freak by Eels and someone told me it is worth more than £150! I have never bought an LP with resale value in mind. Most of mine are worth little.
But I am shamed not to have played Mezzanine and will spin it. All your enthusiasm has had me check it out. It is good that it is available again. Just found out Andy Gangadeen played drums on it. Awesome player and one of my favourite drummers. And had no idea there were Can samples in there. Will listen out for them.
Funnily enough I bought Heligoland also and have only played the CD which came with it so far. In the car.
I can feel a massive lp12 attack coming on.
Ordered this weeks ago from Universal direct, and it arrived today (well, 2 did in fact :-) )
Pretty good pressings so far on listening (double disc) couple of clicks on the opening of side 2 that's all.
I have to say - I was looking for this for an age, but refused to pay the stupid prices, and even worse for copies.
MrClick's LP12 wont know whats hit it with those bass lines ;-)
On a brighter note - the box set of Blue Lines re-master (both cd & vinyl / DVDa ) continues to show how re mastering *should* be applied where needed. Another masterpiece of theirs.
This thread has also inspired me to listen to Tricky's Maxinquaye for the first time in probably 15 years - bloody hell it's still astonishingly good.
Hmmm... are you sure about that?
Not to mine. Curve were a very decent but fairly derivative shoegazery-then-later-electronica act; Massive Attack are of a different class altogether.
Massive Attack - and "Mezzanine" in particular - have/has a huge number of influences: hip-hop, PIL, Krautrock, jazz, 1960s and '70s soundtracks (Popol Vuh, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry especially), electronica, UK post-punk, prog, On-U, MOR/easy...but I can't see Curve in there.
I think the idea that perhaps the finest UK album of the 1990s "owes a huge debt" to an also-ran bunch of goth-cum-industrial rockers is odd to say the least. A bit like saying "Blue Monday" owes a debt to Howard Jones...
How does the reissue sound compared to the original?
Guys, I need some help, Amazon have let me down big time, my copy never arrived so they have now apologised and refunded my money but now I can't find a copy anywhere, talk about gutted, I have waited for years to get this on Vinyl, does anyone know where I could still pick up a copy, cheers.
Paul - seeing as you started this thread off that seems particularly unfortunate.
Try www.jpc.de - they have it in stock. They are based in Germany of course but I have found them to be very reliable as a supplier.
Best of luck - let us know how you get on.
Cheers
David
Thanks David, you are a star, I will order it now and let you know how I get on.
Great website btw, I can see this costing me more than just Mezzanine.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Paul.
Order placed, ended up ordering the Blue Lines Boxset also, doh.
Hopefully it will arrive this time, you never know the other copy might turn up eventually also.
Thanks again David.
Well done…I happen to know a regular and old established online record shop/supplier with a copy of Heligoland on vinyl still available - brand new for £45 if you are interested...
Don't tempt me, oh go on then, may as well do the hatrick
Cheers,
Paul.
Its a rather nice set actually - 2LP with a CD as well, in a proper gatefold heavy duty cover, and a good listen.
You can find one at www.redsparkmusic.com - these guys sell mostly classical and jazz and get overlooked for bands like this. Hence they still have stuff everyone else has sold out of. Ultra reliable.
Enjoy!
Thanks again David, you've really helped me out today with Mezzanine but also cost me a small fortune in albums I wasn't really looking for just yet been listening to Massive Attack all day today though so really couldn't resist as they are all great albums.
Cheers.
Good stuff Paul. I'm glad you snapped up Mezzanine as it looks like you got the last one from JPC - no longer listed!
And do grab Heligoland if you can afford it. Its pretty much sold out on LP everywhere now and Redspark are asking normal price for it. The cheapest on Discogs is £76, and most want over £100 for one. Madness.
Regards
David
