Synology to DAC-V1 by usb
Posted by: Luis_PT on 13 November 2013
It makes any sense to connect a NAS Synology (214Play to a Naim DAC-V1 by Usb and play the Hi-res music stored in the NAS in the Naim set ( NAS -> DACv1 -> 202 -> 200 -> LoudSpeakers) ?
How to choose / control what to play ?
Luis - Not sure if this is any help from one of the other forums I frequent :
I have a Synology DS213J, with the Audio Station streaming software installed. All that's needed is to select the 'USB speakers' option in Audio Station's menu. Then the NAS will stream direct to the Devialet's USB port. You can control Audio Station using the DS Audio iOS or Android app (I'm controlling it from my iPhone, but am thinking of getting an iPad Mini for the purpose) with no need for a PC/Mac to be running in the background.
Thanks for your help,
I was thinking more about the technical part than the pratical one (noise, etc).
As the streaming software tends to evolve a lot and the DAC technology tends to stabilize, maybe it makes sense to separate things and not put both in the same expensive box.
Hi Luis
I cannot comment on the viability of the direct connection, though I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
However, I can comment on Wat's expectations re a noisy NAS.
I have a Synology DS212+ feeding music to the DAC-V1 via a mac mini in the home office.
The NAS drive and the DAC-V1 are both literally an arm's length away from me, across the desk.
The NAS sits on the desk below the right hand wall-mounted PMC speaker, while the DAC-V1 sits near the left hand wall-mounted speaker. So all the gear is within a metre or so of the listener.
The NAS quietly whirrs away and I hear it when there's no music playing. Once the music starts to play (I listen with the DAC-V1 volume normally between 20 and 30 on the volume-o-meter), I just don't notice the NAS at all. The music however is absorbing.
Hope this helps, FT
I would think it would sound dreadful unless you use a long USB so the noisy Synology can be in another room. Or your using some over ears headphones.
Quite. It's a NAS so better sat on the Network elsewhere. If you're going this route then a 172XS would make more sense.
