Bloody Twonky! Help please!!!

Posted by: Moobs79 on 16 November 2013

Hi all

A week or two ago I posted that my Qute couldn't find my WD My Book Live NAS and got a lot of help which pointed to the fact that my Twonky server free trial must have ended. (Thanks to all who helped).

Simple to fix I thought.... We'll I purchased another code for it and entered it and hey presto very little has changed. Basically I can now see the NAS as an option on the Qute both through the iphone app and controller/front screen but when I select it it says the NAS is empty! There's definitely music on there, mostly FLAC but also AAC, MP3 and so on.

The Twonky forum is a waste of time, it won't even let me register!!!

Basically I'm fairly sure it's got to be an easy fix but I'm getting no where and I'm feeling a little emotional about the whole situation. Can anyone help?

Thanks to anyone who has the patience to assist...

From my brief exposure to the Mybooklive, both it and Twonky are rubbish. I'd cut your losses and get a proper NAS, such as a Synology. The expression 'buy cheap, buy twice' could have been invented for this very situation, as I found out.

Have you tried turning your UQ off and on again!? Works for me every time - or rescan your NAS?

HH is so right.

I've got 'Wonky Twonky' on my Qnap NAS. I've disabled it!!

Hungryhalibut-

I'm getting the feeling you might be onto something there...

I've tried restarting everything, I've tried having a static IP address but TalkTalk don't support that apparently... No joy.

I won't be able to get a new NAS for a few months so I was thinking about getting Asset. How would I go about installing it to work with my NAS, I've got the trial on my laptop but it only seems to want to access the laptop and has no effect on my NAS.

Also what NAS would you recommend?

Cheers, Moobs

Hi Moobs,

Can you connect the NAS "as a drive" to your laptop ? In other words: when using explorer, can you go and browse to your NAS ? If so, connect it as a drive and have Assett be pointed at it. The free version of Assett is full functional except for a few options (PlayLists, advanced drill-through etc .. you probably do not need at this moment).

For proper NAS drives you might want to look at Synology, QNAP etc allthough I think there is nothing wrong with your current one.

Cheers,

Iver

I'm no expert, but bought a Synology DS213j, after reading good things about the make. It costs £160, and then you add drives. The WD red is recommended for NAS use, and cost £110 or so for 3TB. You can install two drives and set it so that one backs up the other. You can fit over 3000 albums in WAV into 3TB, and if you think you will need more than this you can start with a 4 bay NAS, or buy a second one later.

Hi Moobs79

I stream from a WDMyBookLive to SuperUniti and Qute, wired/wireless and at the same time (different music in different locations) so can confirm WD stuff CAN work without a hitch with Naim gear in many different modes of operation. As you aren't getting a new NAS for a bit I can offer some help to get to the bottom of this problem.

1st thing, forget Asset for the moment, that runs on the PC. Can you give as much info. you can see when you login from the WD dashboard, cheers, h3o

Click on setting and you should see

Systems | Network | Utilities | Remote Access | Media

Can you see the six options listed below when 'Systems' is selected?

Moobs, could it be a share access problem?. When I bought a Synology recently, I had the same issue in that my Unitiserve could see the NAS but would not display the files therein. I looked in the privilges area of the NAS and the setting for "Guest Access" was "No Access", a quick change to read/write solved this.

^^ Yes on the left (3rd down) is "Shares", make sure the music folder is enabled for media sharing, the 'note' logo should be solid black not light grey!

Moobs don't worry I'm in most of today (just hope I can get it sorted quickly for you) It took me 2 days to get mine running but it was the PCs (dot)Framework that was old and incompatible that caused my issues (of course I blamed the NAS at first!), since then I've had no probs at all with WD, accepting it's interface is rather 'basic' and unintuitive.

OK on 'share list' I've got the camera, note and movie icons in black.

In settings I've got the following:

General

Date & Time

Updates

Alert & Event notifications

Energy saver

Mac back ups

By the way I'm running windows 7 if that helps?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by hafler3o

OK, 'shares' seems to be in the right place:

My WD is as follows

In General: What usage is yours reporting? Mine shows 482GB (quarter full)

In Settings/Updates: Version - MyBookLive 02.43.03-022 : Core F/W. Yours?

In Energy Saver: Enabled (might be worth disabling yours for the moment)

Permanently disabling Energy Saver removes a 'Can't Play.. message" you get on a rarity of occasions because the QuteUniti times out before the file is found, repeating the instruction to the player always gets it to play...

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

OK

In General usage is 582GB just over half.

In Settings/Update version MyBookLive 02.43.03-022:Core F/W

In Energy Saver was enabled now disabled

Connection Options: Windows XP Compatibility

Yours may be set to 'Automatic', it might be worth going back and trying 'XP' a little later on.

OK! Thanks, before we go on there's a question in my mind! You have the same version of Twonky as me (an obsolete version WD purchased a license for to plonk on their drives) but at the top you said you had a free trial (of something which came to an end) and purchased (I assume) a key or upgraded version (I think Twonky is in the 7.x.x iteration now) Your device is reporting it has the bog-standard (fine but '3 years ago model') Twonky.

That means two things

a) it's not upgraded correctly

b) you never needed to in the 1st place

Leaving this aside for the moment, if you double-click 'MyBookLive Twonky media' you should get a web-browser tab to open on a Twonky page that has a House, Arrow and Spanner on the left hand side. Can you do that?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Weird...

I double clicked it and it installed its self. another double click and it opens windows media player...

Left click and 'view device webpage' worked though and I'm there!

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by hafler3o

OK, click the spanner in a circle.

   First steps

   Sharing

   Media Receivers

   Network

   Maintenance

click sharing and a page should be seen showing the twonky software content locations

/public should have Music OR all content types enabled for it, is this the case?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Yes it has All content types selected
