Bloody Twonky! Help please!!!

Posted by: Moobs79 on 16 November 2013

Hi all

A week or two ago I posted that my Qute couldn't find my WD My Book Live NAS and got a lot of help which pointed to the fact that my Twonky server free trial must have ended. (Thanks to all who helped).

Simple to fix I thought.... We'll I purchased another code for it and entered it and hey presto very little has changed. Basically I can now see the NAS as an option on the Qute both through the iphone app and controller/front screen but when I select it it says the NAS is empty! There's definitely music on there, mostly FLAC but also AAC, MP3 and so on.

The Twonky forum is a waste of time, it won't even let me register!!!

Basically I'm fairly sure it's got to be an easy fix but I'm getting no where and I'm feeling a little emotional about the whole situation. Can anyone help?

Thanks to anyone who has the patience to assist...

Next click 'Media Receivers'

Mine shows a list of Generic Media Receivers with an associated IP address, can you see one that has your Qute address? If you're not sure it's given in the iDevice controller when you hit the settings 'gearwheel' or the settings menu on the Qute itself.. there may be more than 1 entry for the same device (Qute), how many do you see?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Yep the Qute is on there, I have six IP addresses the Qute is the last on the list but IP no. 1.3

Now we have covered most bases! The physical connection (rj45 leads) is Qute into modem, WD into modem (no network switches in between) Correct?

Oh, also how have you set Navigation, I use a simple folder view (First Steps - Navigation Tree - Folder)?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Connection between Qute to modem to WD is ethernet nothing else in there.

First steps: Navigation tree set to Advanced default navigation... Shall I switch?

Might as well!

The only significant difference is I'm running my book in XP mode, you're not (for obvious reasons!)

Now I think we can conclude you are not doing much wrong on set-up. What's worrying me is the non-upgraded Twonky software (did you get some message, pop-up, email about a trial ending or was that a 'suggestion' that was tried?)

I'm assuming you can play your NAS files on the PC and other devices, it's just the Qute that will not 'see' the NAS at the moment, obviously I'm assuming you used your current PC with the current set-up to put the files on the NAS in the first place. Is this assumption correct?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

So I've changed to By Folder.

I didn't or don't remember getting a message to say the trial had finished at all it was pointed out to me by another forum user that the media server might be the problem, that's when I realised that I needed to buy another key.

The Qute can, since I entered the new key, see the NAS as an option along with the laptops but when I select it it gives me the message 'empty' and searches for about 10-20 seconds then says 'no servers'.

I can play the AAC and MP3 files on the NAS through the laptop but for some reason not the FLAC?

I used both this and my other laptop to rip the files using dbpoweramp.

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

I have a Twonky task bar that opens a similar page to the web address you pointed me to which gives me a few different options and when I go to Sharing the content locations are all my C drive. now if I try to add my NAS which is the T drive it won't give me the option to select is, only C, D and bizarrely the Q drive which I can't identify...

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by hafler3o

I can't get my head around the (non) upgraded Twonky software making a difference in the Qute seeing the NAS (but still flakey!)

Can you shut down the NAS from the Settings - utilities section of the MyBookLive tab. Let me know if that Q drive disappears or not. Give it 5 minutes then pull out/push in the power connector to get it restarted, cheers.

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Right I've shut id down and Q drive is still there but that's OK Q drive is listed in My Computer so it's part of my laptop right?

Still I don't see why this stupid  thing isn't working!!! Also how do I turn it back on?

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by hafler3o

To turn it back on you just reapply the power, pull out/push in the power lead

Let me know when it's back and you've tried accessing it with the Qute and PC again, cheers!

If it's not working run the Full Diagnostics test on the Utilities page.

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Okey dokey its back on but still cannot access through the Qute. I can access through the laptops though... so in conclusion no change.

Posted on: 17 November 2013 by Moobs79

Forgot to do the full diagnostic test you asked me to do. running now...

Thanks for all the help by the way, I'm sure this isn't how you like to be spending your Sunday...!

So what have we learned? The WD interface shows settings that lead us to think the NAS can share with the network but it's not sharing anything with the Qute. Most likely scenario, in order of possibility:

1) NAS faulty

2) Qute faulty

3) Network faulty

4) Perm any of the above in combination.

My current thought is to 'borrow' a NAS from a friend if you can, don't go chucking money around in a shop unless you are desparate, as there is a chance the problem will still be there (if it's network related).

You could try switching from Automatic to XP compatible mode in Connection Options under Remote Access but I'm not sure that will do anything positive. I will ask around further and think more about this conundrum. Also start a new thread with this problem (as people may not want to add anything on this one after such a lengthy checklist). You are still running the old s/w so it might be worth trying to reinstall whatever newer version of Twonky you paid for.

I've had worse Sundays  I was just hoping we could iron this one out a little sooner! It must be an 'access' issue that the software is not dealing with (ie. reporting the folders are available for access when in fact they are still private) I'm not going to let this one lie (as they say), I remember a lot of frustration when I got my WD device, but after 2 days of non-stop swearing it all fell into place.

Hafler,

I've been following this discussion; totally ignorant of streaming , but interesting. If there was a forum Victoria Cross medal for streaming you deserve it for unselfish persistence.

You make this forum what it is. Great!

I have Twonky 6.04 which is not too far away from your version.

Have you got your music folder selected as in the picture?

SJB, thanks that's really handy, the directory path for music needs to mirror the location of the music, I'm not sure how the two could get separated but it's worth double checking.

Graham, thanks for the kind words, it's a shame it didn't get fixed yet, winners never quit though (they say!)

One other thing to check on the NAS drive's web page under settings on the media tab.

Whilst you may have Twonky ticked as enabled you need to make sure that your Qute isn't "Blocked" (the first tick box on the left) in the list of Media Players. Make sure you check the whole list for your Qute and its IP address as it is not unknown for multiple entries to appear and it only needs to be be blocked on one of them to prevent Twonky streaming to your device.

Hi Moobs79

See my post above which I think may answer your problem especially as you say that your laptops can see the NAS/Twonky media server content but the Qute cannot i.e. you would see the NAS drive itself but not the Twonky media server content. This would be the case if the "Block" checkbox was checked for the Qute but unchecked for your laptops in your list of Media Players on the WD's Settings/Media webpage.

I've no idea what this thread is about, but with something as inelegantly named as "Twonky" how on earth can you expect anything other than perpetual hassle and headache? Isn't life a bit too short to be worrying about this kind of crap. Why not just put a record or a CD on instead?

Well don't leave us in suspense, how did you get on?

You have the same version of Twonky as me (an obsolete version WD purchased a license for to plonk on their drives) but at the top you said you had a free trial (of something which came to an end) and purchased (I assume) a key or upgraded version (I think Twonky is in the 7.x.x iteration now) Your device is reporting it has the bog-standard (fine but '3 years ago model') Twonky.

That means two things

a) it's not upgraded correctly

b) you never needed to in the 1st place

Leaving this aside for the moment, if you double-click 'MyBookLive Twonky media' you should get a web-browser tab to open on a Twonky page that has a House, Arrow and Spanner on the left hand side. Can you do that?

It's a cert that Moobs67 has not upgraded his version of Twonky on his NAS Drive. To do this involves enabling SSH on the WD MyBookLive and running a fairly complicated script. I certainly would not attempt to do this as I understand it invalidates WD's warranty. What I suspect is that he has downloaded and installed a trial version of either Twonky Media Manager or Twonky Media Server on to his computer.

Hi Guy's

Sorry I've gone missing, I can see you're all as invested in this as I am!

I've had to go away for a few days for work, I'll be back on Thursday to try some of these things out...

In the mean time I've just got a couple of questions:

Sloop John B & Hafler3o- Thanks for the screen grab. My NAS is shown as T drive so should the string be something like T:\MyBookLive\Public\Music because when I open the Twonky dashboard it already gives me \Public?

sjbabbey- The Qute's IP address is definitely ticked. Also When I go to my computer and right click on the Qute icon I get an option to allow streaming to it I tried it before thinking that must be it but it didn't work, I'll try it again when I get back.

Kevin-W- Never has anything been more aptly named... (Love the avatar by the way, a personal favourite)

sjbabbey- I have no idea whether I installed Twonky manager or server when I got the NAS I just stuck the CD in and went through the standard install procedure, kind of wish I'd paid more attention... When I went to the Twonky site to buy another key it did give me the option to buy both the manager and server key and I assumed it would be the server I needed but you know what the say about assumptions! Because I can access the Twonky dashboard through the tool bar icon and through the my computer section and they give me different options I was was thinking it might be a good idea to re-install it or re-build it. What do you think?

Anyway thanks for all the help, with all of your help I won't be left with a really expensive internet radio!!!

Cheers,

Moobs

Moobs79

Go back to Hafler3o's post on page 1 (post No.21 I think) where he mentions about the Media tab on the settings page of the WD NAS drive web interface (the black and green web page) i.e. not the Twonky config page. You must look there at the different Media Players to make sure that your Qute and /or its IP address do not have have a check in the "Block" checkbox.

I've seen this issue before where n-stream for my ND5XS would show one of my WD NAS drives as a Twonky UPnP server but when I tried to open it it would be empty i.e. no navigation folders. It was because my streamer was blocked on that NAS drive.

I with you on this. Trying to deal with something called "Twonky" is to severely taunt the gods of nominative determinism.
