Superuniti and Spendor A3 or A5?

Posted by: TigerJWW on 17 November 2013

I'm new to the world on Naim and looking to invest in a quality 'one box' solution. Space in my living room is limited, basically the speaker location is limited to either side of a fire place. I've tried PMC Twenty 23's, love the speaker but unfortunately they just look too big! An alternative is the Spendor A3 or A5, but happy to consider other compact floor standers that will do justice to the Superuniti. I'd welcome any thoughts and guidance to ensure a great system!

The Spendor A3 has just come top of a hifi rag supertest, Totem, Kudos, Motive and Leema do small floorstanders too, if size is a problem why not get a small monitor with slim stands (I use PMC DB1i plus Hifi Racks Ltd. Slimline T5 in the bedroom. Looks and sounds grrr8 tiger!)

I tried the A5s for a while, in the position you describe. They have loads of bass and need to be well away from the wall. The SuperUniti has quite a fulsome sound, and with the Spendors I predict disaster! I use the GB1i, which is very good 8" from the wall. might they work? If not, the twenty 21 or 22 on their stands could be just what you need.

The GB1i would work I think, the trouble with the 22 on stands is that they are a lot larger than the pics suggest or people suspect, they are very deep (nearly 6" deeper than the GB1i and an inch wider, on their stands they are over a metre tall) I used to be able to watch telly from my desk in the corner of the living room, now I see a gloss black lozenge shape instead)

If OP liked the sound of them they could go on the mantlepiece!

I had a pair of Kudos X2 on the end of my Superuniti and they sounded fantastic. They are smallish floor standers, not too fussy with placement and a great match for Naim
