Ripped CD will not play

Posted by: David O'Higgins on 18 November 2013

I have a recording of Shostakovich piano concertos 1 and 2 on RCA 74321 29254 2. My Unitiserve has steadfastly refused to copy it to its disc, even though it plays perfectly on the 555CD player. It is as though it is copy protected.

However, my latest attempt to get it into the US seems to have succeeded. All the tracks are listed correctly, the CD metadata having been taken from Free DB. So far, so good, but......It will not stream from the US  - it's there, but I can't play it!!

Has anyone else had such an experience?

Yes. Very infrequently I gets tracks listed but none will play. Also albums with incomplete track listings. A network share refresh usually does it. But there is also the option to power things down and go as far as restarting the network. I hope it's no more than that.

An alternative would be to rip the CD on PC or Mac, add tags and put it in an enabled network share which the US can see. I did this with one CD and it shows seamlessly in my collection. I can't remember why I had to do this, but it worked.

Thanks Harry. Forgive my ignorance, but what is a 'network share refresh'? Also, did you experience the repeated refusal to rip, as I did in this instance?

Ah. Sorry David, I may have made a subconscious incorrect assumption. I store my music on a NAS. If you don't, then my response won't be of any use to you apart from the usual suggestion of restarting it all from the hub outwards  - which is neverless often effective.

On my NAS I have network shares, which are folders, which contain my music. One of them is the music store for my HDX which is where it rips music to. The rest are enabled to be visible and readable. This is where my HiRes stuff goes, both downloaded and ripped off DVD-A and Blu-Ray. Because the HDX (and US) doesn't care about the location when indexing, it will take albums by a particular artist, stored in various shares and group them all into one list seamlessly.

On one occasion, IIRC, I had a hybrid SACD, the CD layer of which could not be read by the HDX. So I ripped it on my PC, put it in a network share (not the one used as the music store by the HDX, which should not be externally molested) and after refreshing all shares it displayed correctly under the Artist, along with all the other albums residing in the music store.

If you are using a NAS or if your US HDD has the facility of a folder for storing downloaded music, you can place a "problem" CD in here over your network and that might well fix it. I don't know if the FW yet allows for this, or if it is something proposed for the future. I have the SSD HDX so such things do not apply.

The only other situation when a CD would not rip correctly does not, I suspect relate to your problem. In this instance the HDX would not display the full track listing no matter how many times it ripped it. This was because, having deleted a partially successful rip I forgot to empty the recycle bin. Once I'd done this, the next rip went through and displayed in full.

For what that's worth.

Some CDs are not encoded to the proper Redbook specification and cannot be ripped [easily].  They of course play fine on a CD player.

Thank you both, especially Harry for such a comprehensive reply!

Have you try from the remote or the control panel?

Also – does putting the App into “UPnP Compatibility” mode (from the setup menu on the app) resolve the cannot play issue?

Matteo,

I have tried to play it with Nserve and with Desktop client. There is no remote control for a Unitiserve.
