yet another very basic question

Posted by: Louis-Andre on 19 November 2013

Hi all,

I am thinking about buying a NAS (I seem to hear Synology is a good choice?) to go with my SBT/TeddyDac set up.

My questions are (sorry I know they are basic but please bear with me):

1) does the NAS need to be directly wired to the router? Or can NAS be connected wirelessly?

2) I have some emopty shelves on my rack, would it make sense to place the NAS on one of the shelves, or should it be separate to hi fi equipment rack?

My hi fi system is approx 10 meters away from the router, and wiring via ethernet is really not a good option...so that is why I am asking...

Thanks for your advices

The nas needs to be hard wired. Yes you can do it wirelessly with the right devices but it will be flakey and will fail you often. Ethernet leads to your router can run for up to 100 metres.

Do not put a nas in your listening room, they are all noisy.

People generally place the Nas elsewhere, to removssues such as fan noise (on the Nas).

The Nas shoud be hard wired to the router

Hifi can be wireless connection, using something like airport express, but better to hard wire, if possible

+1.

NAS are noisy beasts. Should be away and wired through ethernet.

My Synology 212j is now in another room away from the hi fi, but for a few months it was in the same room.  I would not go so far as to call it a "noisy beast."  It is not SILENT, but IMHO it's relatively quiet.  I could have lived with it in the same room, and part of my motivation to move it was to get ALL of the non-hi fi hardware out of that room -- aesthetics. I did not like looking at it, the lights, and the jumble of wires.  (The cable modem, switch, nas and Time Capsule were all in the same room as the hi fi.  It was inelegant in the parlor.)

It now is all on a little rack in my loft office area, connected to the hi fi (NDS) via a long piece of ethernet cable in the walls.

I only use my NAS for backup, but it lives in my sitting room, along with the stereo. It's a Synology 213j, and seems very quiet.

How much storage space do you want / need?

The NAS can be connected wirelessly according to Synology.

3 Ways of Using DS213air
1. Wireless Hotspot

Provides the WiFi ability to your network.

2. Wireless Router

DS213air can be the sole networking device to all wireless clients in your surrounding.

3. Join Wireless Network

DS213air can be placed wirelessly for hard to reach locations, joining your network as a WiFi client.

anything is possible, does not mean it will be good.

Why not spend a little bit more and get a very quiet Nas like Ripnas?

Have owned one for quite some time and I'm happy with it. It sits on my Fraim, hard wired, no noise has ever been heard from it

Given your situation, there are two options...

1) have a NAS in your listening room (something like a RipNAS will be quieter than a Synology NAS).  This can be wired to your streamer and then wirelessly to your router to allow it the required internet access.

2) locate the NAS next to your router and use a short cable from NAS to router.  Then connect the streamers with wireless.

Out of interest what do people mean by noisy? As noisy as a SKY HD box?

Posted on: 20 November 2013 by Louis-Andre

hi Eloise,

Is option 2 as good as option 1? If so I might try just that.

thanks to all for your input

Unless the ripnas uses fanless and ssds, it will make noise. If you are even slightly sensitive to noise, then really you don't want a nas in the living room.

Sorry, Gary, you don't know Ripnas. System is on an SSD, music on two 2.5" HDD, no noise 1m away

I have a Qnap NAS hard wired to my router, as is my UnitiServe SSD. The fan on the NAS is noisy, so I will be moving it away to another room once I get around to covering all my wires and cables in D-Line trunking. Having said all that, my buzzing HiCap DR definitely gives the noisy NAS a run for it's money!
