UnitiServe SSD question

Posted by: Thiem on 20 November 2013

Can one of the forum members explain to me where the US SSD stores the metadata such as genre, artist, performer? If I look into the folders on my NAS, the folder (\"artist"\"CD title") that contains the CD's ripped WAV files also has the folder.jpg file and a few more files. Is there other metadata kept on the SSD of the US?

There is an .xml file somewhere that has this data.  I forget exactly where it's located.

Yes, as the live metadata the US is using, is hidden in an embedded Microsoft SQLserver database (if I remember correctly). You're not supposed to have a direct access to this database. The DTC (Windows) and n-Serve (Mac OS X) are there for this purpose. It is populated with the results of the AMG (or FreeDB) queries when albums are ripped.

Now, I think there's some sort of copy of the metadata in an XML file in the folder where the WAV files reside on your NAS (maybe hidden in a ZIP; at least that's where it is when you buy an album as a download on the Naim Label store). At least the AMG API returns an XML stream, so this might be the result of this initial query. I don't know if the changes that you can make to the metadata through the DTC or n-Serve end up in these XML files as well as in the embedded database.

Owners of HDX/UnitiServe will correct me soon.

But more important: why do you want to know ? Are you trying to achieve something specific or is it just curiosity ?

Owning a US, I know about network shares, promoting network shares to music stores and that network shares need to be empty before they can be promoted to music stores. Recently. I had my US repaired and received it back upgraded to the latest firmware.

After being switched on, the US "saw" the network shares on my NAS but there were no music stores. So I promoted the network shares to music stores with all the ripped music in there, which is not in line with Naim's instructions.

After having done so, everything worked again with full access to all music. This triggered the question whether there is "music store" related info on the SSD or on the NAS. So, yes, curiosity...
