Network Hard Drives (Streaming Audio)

Posted by: min66 on 22 November 2013

I have a SuperUniti streamer and I'm wanting to use stream FLAC audio (CD ripping) from a network drive, can someone recommend me a suitable drive that is capable of high end lossless streaming? Thank you ...what about the Synology DS112+ any good?

Netgear ReadyNAS Duo V2 works well for me.  Straight of the box it's seen by my NDS...  and as shares are added to compartmentalise (that's a big word for 9pm !!) my music they are seen by the NDS. No faffin around, it just does what it says on the tin

Synology and Netgear are the 2 recommended NAS drive brands.

Netgear, one model, easy.ReadyNas Duo v2.

For Synology 12 or 13 are the year, the prefix 1 is for 1 drive, 2 for 2 bays.

Then you can go with 113, 113J, 113+ or 113R.

I would recommend 213J, the cheapest 2 bays, good plastic case, other versions have a metal case and hot swap capability (useless at home). All Synology's share the same software.

Both solutions are about the same price (200$ in $lands) + drives.

My recommendation would be a UnitiServe, which is lovely piece of kit and avoids the need for a PC to rip. I have a Synology 213j for backup, which works really well. If you just use a NAS, ensure you have two disks, for security. If you think you will exceed 3TB of storage, go for a 4 disk machine.
