Enjoying the ND5XS

Posted by: Magnus Hultstrand on 24 November 2013

Borrowed an ND5XS from my dealer yesterday and will return it tomorrow (Monday). I must say that I am amazed.. First of all, my knowledge about streaming and computer audio in general are poor to say the least. Anyway, within 5 minutes the streamer were connected and up and running. I had prepared a NAS (WD My book Live) with all of my CD:s (+600) ripped to FLAC. The sound? Very very good IMHO. My source before was the CD5i. As good as it is the ND5XS outperforms it in every way. My only problem is that the albums on my NAS shows the tracks in alphabetical order and not the correct order in "Folder view". Btw I'm using nStream on my iPhone 4 as remote. I will most likely order the streamer mentioned above on Monday.
Lovely stuff :-)
I have auditioned it with my NaitXS and Ovator S-400.

Hi Magnus,

IRadio is frankly a revelation. If you can imagine 10,000 radio stations and podcasts from all over the planet at your finger tips..... Actually, I have found myself listening to IRadio increasingly more, at the moment my figures are a little like this; streaming 60%. IRadio 40%, this changed from 80-20 six months ago.

The quality is also amazing considering they are mainly mp3 files sent (okay, some are really crap from far off places). Not quite got into Naim Radio though, although the quality is good, I just find it a little all over the place and normally switch over to something else after 15 minutes.

Also, if you do not have a HiLine, pop one on, it will greatly improve the sound from the off.

Keep us posted on your journey.

Thanks Jason. I will consider a Hi Line eventually. And I agree with your thoughts about iRadio. It's really fun to browse the stations available. My wife is also very happy, now Spotify sounds much better according to her (and me) through the NDX :-)

Magnus,  same Christmas present for me this year.

I'm loving it. Can't turn it off... A giant leap fwd. My speakers really deserved something similar.

iRadio is fun. Spotify, yes it sounds better...  But what a difference when you play hi-res files !

Did you mention the Naim App ? Much better than I thought. Nice and intuitive design, easy and fast. I might sound too enthusiastic... but I'm... Really suggested.

Congrats ! I agree in everything you have mentioned. Mine have been playing almost non stop for almost a week and it brings so much fun to the listening. I have rediscovered my record collection (FLAC 16/44) and I'm loving it. Haven't tried Hi-Res though, but I will in the near future :-)
