SuperUniti burn-in time?
Posted by: ChrisH on 01 December 2013
My Uniti sold on a popular auction site today, will be packed up and couriered tomorrow to its new owner.
So tomorrow morning I'm off to my dealer to collect my new SuperUniti!
I am really excited and looking forward this next step in musical enjoyment.
The one thing that I really am not looking forward to though, is potentially having to suffer through the burn in period with the SU sounding worse than the lovely Uniti I am just about to part with.
Those of you with an SU, how long did it take to really come on song?
just so I know what I am going to have to live with!
I'm obviously cloth eared, because I thought it only took a few days. Left on, of course.
I asked my dealer to put it through it's paces before I picked it up (I ordered it in the last week of July). It was delivered to him 3 and a half weeks later, the Naim summer shut-down was in the middle of that so I was pleasantly surprised at the short wait. He had it for the half week, so when I walked in there it was playing, connected to some Elac 330 CE's, and making a very pleasant sound!
I'd say since then the major change has been a drop-off of digital 'sheen' and over-bright starkness in the high registers. I'd changed my music making equipment in order to get away from 'showyness', the SU seemed too uncouth at the top despite it's obvious superiority over Qute2 and UnitiLite.
Last night my wife and I listened to Vangelis' "Mythodea", it's not something I'd have chosen if the SU were still like I first had it [2x competing sopranos, bombastic, complex] and we both enjoyed it immensely. There was a certain amount of 'music avoidance' going on in the early weeks of ownership, but not now. I'm no longer thinking twice about what the music may sound like so I'd say 3 months 'running in' for me and it's job done, in that time we have also used it for full time sound duty when watching TV and DVD.
Of course at no point was I not enjoying music, there was just some artifice in it that was stopping me getting 'immersed' in the sound.
Oops!
Thanks for the info guys.
It also seems that HH's post disappeared in the meantime - it was there, now it's gone!
Anyway, I think by Christmas it will have settled down a bit from what you have said,
And then will continue to improve for a while yet, but I guess I will be used to the sound by then so it may not be apparent to my ears. Until as you say Hafler, I will play something that previously was difficult on the ears but all of a sudden, isn't any more!
The SU is now in situ and sounds from new better than the Uniti that it replaced.
So its all good if it gets better from here.
Think I was worried in case I set it up and it sounded worse out f the box than the Uniti.....

I was just worried it might go 'bang'. I had some bad luck with Naim early on but the product support and dealers have been excellent. That reminds me to add a couple of Xmas cards to my list!
Sorry, I removed the post because I made a mistake that I was no longer able to edit. I'm pleased you like it, and over the next few weeks it will just get better.
I thought the Management might have had a hand in your post removal!
anyway, I also noted your point about cables (I am presuming this was the error you wanted to edit after I had looked up the make....)
I will look into this along with the US upgrade we talked about once my finances settle back down again!
Thanks HH.
Excellent. Have fun.
I bought my SUniti is March 2012. It was good from the outset,
but continued to improve until July or August of that year, i.e.
five to six months. Well worth the wait...

I've had mine for six weeks now and I just love it! At one point I noticed that the lower frequencies just didn't fit together with the middle and upper frequencies. It was almost like it was two songs playing. Having said that it could very well be the speakers fault as they were also new. It's incredible that such great music can stem from a little box. It really is super!
