Accessing home NAS from second home using Naim equipment – can it be done?

Posted by: Stampie on 07 December 2013

I currently run an NDX with Synology NAS and Minimserver at home, but am now going to be living away from home a lot over the next several months.

I would like to access the music on my NAS whilst I am away using something like a UnitiQute, but I’m not sure if this is achievable or not.

I can already access the NAS whilst away using my laptop via the DLink DNS service, so I can see the files, but I’m not sure whether I will be able to configure the UnitiQute to find the NAS.

Has anyone had any success in achieving this? If not, can anyone recommend something else that will do this?

Thanks for reading

thats a big ask in as much as you are looking for a dnla/upnp service to run over the web. FWIW I would go for the most simple option as possible. i.e. take it with you.

The most reliable method I have found to date for media on the move is Plex server, nost sure if that runs on your nas but worth a look.

However the reality is you will need to hook something to the qute to hear that music at the other end.

You could look down VPN tunnels and the likes, but really you want a really robust and reliable upload speed of at least 10MB/s otherwise its just going to be disappointing.

JRiver.  Best ever.  But wont run on your NAS.

A duplicate set of your files on a usb hard drive, and then some sort of UPnP server to serve to the Qute. Your choice on that; something laptop-based is probably easiest.  If the laptop has a big enough hard drive, forget the separate drive.

+1 on making a duplicate set of files and taking it with you - that would also be an excellent backup solution!

Thanks for the responses.

It is pretty much as I suspected, I just need to decide which way to go.

I'm having a demo of a UnitiQute2 next weekend, so will take my laptop along and see how I get on.

Cheers

I set up "Net Drive" (google it for more info)  to access my NAS remotely. Essentially, my NAS will be mapped like drive on my windows notebook from where ever I am in remotely so long as I get an internet connection. If you are able to do this, I presume the next step is to set up asset upnp on your notebook and configure it to read this location.

This is how conceptually it is supposed to work but you need to ensure bandwidth is not a bottleneck.

I presume that is the same principle if your music is stored in the Cloud....but perhaps less stable?
