How many CDs/LPs did you get yourself this year?
For me, 2013 was a record (low) year, ending up with a grand total of 11 new CDs, six classical and five Jazz albums. The good news is that none of them turned out to be a dud.
Haim,
From my perspective, I humbly look up to you and salute your willpower and steadfastness to manage such a feat of self control. My only concern is that eleven is not such a great or balanced number. Since you already overshot ten, (the better number), I would encourage you to live a little and go for twelve which is also a much more fitting number as you then align with exactly one per month.
As long as I can remember, I collected music (more modestly though but still considered excessive by normal standards) but sadly, my consumption has exponentially grown over the last 8 years with 2013 marking my all time record high. This time also coincides exactly through a stressful period during which I have been (and continue to be) severely taken advantage of by an....opportunistic gold digger. This hobby for sure has caused some financial struggle for me over this time but ironically, beyond the issue of finances or lack of them, music is also just the thing that has saved me. I could not say where I would be without it. I lost everything but music is the one thing that no human will take from me.
I am optimistic that 2014 will be the start of my return to a more normal life after such a long time. I don't know if I ever could manage only one per month though? Seems impossible even under ideal circumstances?
Regards,
Doug

Haim, you may as well get the bakers dozen ; )
Well, the Messiaen/Aimard was a double disc so we can agree on a dozen. On a second reflection, the Aaron Parks album is kind of a semi dud though I still keep playing it, trying not to loose hope.
Debs and Doug, what are your numbers? Ball park figures are O.K..
43 additions this year, about half CD, half downloads which I load on individual USB sticks and treat as CDs (this is as far as I'll go with streaming). About an average number - the year started slow but October and November saw quality release after quality release.

I just had a look - shocked myself a bit...only for half a year I am already on 60, so for the year I am assuming far over 100......Which includes also quite a number of box set's
Did some catch up:-)
Actually, there were a couple more - but if a first spin disappoints I generally don't keep the disc.

Probably between 100 and 150 vinyl albums and maybe 15 cd's this year.

I also keep the ones which are less likeable....

For a long time, so did I - but I found I became jaded and almost treated new acquisitions like lunch in the office, a perfectly normal routine event. So I started planning a bit more carefully and only buy if I feel a genuine sense of anticipation. It brought the fun - and occasional disappointment, of course - back.

Still 25+ new items added to my collection this year and I am happy for those (mostly vinyl, a few downloads and one CD). Fortunately the services of the local library are available just around the corner so the activity on that front has increased a lot.
This year so far I would hazard a guess at 40 LPs and about 50 cds, some of which I have not liked upon first listenings but I tend to keep them and play them occasionally to see if they work for me. A classic example was an Opeth album bought last year, played it about 10 times, didn't get it, then about a month ago started playing it again and I bloody love it, it's never off the cdp. I also tried this with the Daft punk album but sadly still no joy, I may have to give up on this one. Next year probably.

I recognize how you go about appreciating CD's - I think it's very mood dependent, and especially more difficult ones to appreciate require the right mood and then it starts to grow on you. F.i. I was never much into "Lieder", but then got into contact with the music of Matthias Goerne (Schubert collection), was bold and in the mood, and now I am happy that I have the collection...

2013 for me the same.
Max 5 discs purchased.
In lifetime ~3000
Circa 100 LPs. About 40% Amazon/other new purchases and 60% SH original vinyl from my man at the market. Only 1 CD all year, purchased at the request of SWMBO.
I dare not count, must be in the 100's- new & second hand. Had 6 vinyl albums delivered this month up to press!. Plus the odd CD!
Graham.
An interesting post; I hadn't appreciated how little music I have bough this year.
LPs 4: 2 new release, 2 re-issue
CDs 14: 1 new release and 13 re-issues/older
Compared to other years that is a big reduction; furthermore none of the 3 brand new albums get that much airplay. 2013 can hardly be said to have been a vintage year for new music.
A great idea!
I think I am going to check out the library, too.
39 CD's and 14 High Res. Downloads for me.
Since owning a Uniti (now Superuniti) and Unitiserve combo, despite being able to stream whatever I want from Napster/Spotify, I have found my actual purchases increasing due to discovering new music from the aforementioned services as well as Internet Radio.
So 2013 was higher in terms of purchases, which was higher than 2012, etc.

Home taping is killing music.

Who's taking about taping (it's a good way to try before buying and also to give access to material which is not necessary commercially available). I hope also that you are aware that around here the libraries are paying royalty fees and that the remuneration is included in the price of the hard drives (and other storage meadia). All in all I think that artists are covered concerning the library material (if copied). I would be more worried about the usage of e.g. Spotify in this respect.

Yes yes of course
For me it is 1830 tracks.

Good we have an understanding
About 80 which includes several CDs
Around 5 CDs, 20 new albums (amazon/others), +/- 600 albums(auctions) of which I kept something like 150. The RCM has never been so busy!
