How many CDs/LPs did you get yourself this year?
For me, 2013 was a record (low) year, ending up with a grand total of 11 new CDs, six classical and five Jazz albums. The good news is that none of them turned out to be a dud.
A great idea!
I think I am going to check out the library, too.
Home taping is killing music.
Bananahead:
Actually I wasn't thinking ripping and return. ( so many of my friends' kids do it tho. I've noticed that young generation don't feel like paying for music since they can get it free. )
It just dawned on me I have been buying some CDs that I have no reason to listen again. Library lending would save me a few bucks and the shelf space, too. If I like the CD, I'd purchase it. I am going to use them as a listening station before purchase like I used to do at record store.
I admit that I used to engage in illegal music taping activity when I was in a high school. The cost of records were very high so I had to think twice before buy them. Like I've never own any Beatles records, for instance. ( but they were *mandatory* listening so I had to borrow from a friend )
Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti was another I have never bought any of their records myself but borrowed from a friend and I made a tape. ( seems all the cool kids were listening to them )
This was well over 30 years ago.

It's ok I wasn't accusing anyone here .
There have been stories this week about Noddy getting a lot of money for his 40 year old hit. I wonder if I get a copy from a friend if he will miss my contribution.
This year I bought downloaded music for the first time. Rolling Stones and Massive Attack in 24 bit and some Elefant things through Bandcamp. http://elefantrecords.bandcamp.com/
More than I can afford or have space for, that's for sure.
I'm going to Brighton in an hour or so. Must. Stay. Away. From. Record. Shops.
.....12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20 doh
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ........
This is hard work and I keep getting interrupted.
At some point during the year Mrs Lutyens announced that we should buy each other gifts that were experiences rather than things (quieten down at the back there!!), which meant that i didn't have to hint at what record i might like. I took it as an instruction that it was ok to go and buy the records i wanted myself. So I have. Mrs Lutyens has begun to notice them encroaching accross the floor in my study though! How many? As I have been very fortunate this year quite a few and like Debs a number second hand. Unfortunately my favourite SH shoppie has started to price itself out of my wallet so they have been fewer lately. I take the view that what i buy now will be listened to eventually even if one record, Prefab Sprout's latest for instance, hogs the turntable for a while. The other two that have hogged it most are probably Boz Scaggs' Memphis and Randell Bramlett's new one.
I bought 9 new CDs in Fopp last Monday alone. Thank goodness I now rip them and don't have to keep them in a pile by the hifi!
Crikey, do you all keep detailed records (pun unintended) of what you've bought? I can see how download purchases can easily be totted up like this, but how do you all keep track of your vinyl/CD purchases with such certainty?
According to Amazon's and fleaBay's records - because I certainly don't keep my own - I bought 38 CDs this year, nearly all 2nd hand. Very few duds, lots of snapping up of albums I had as a younger chap on vinyl/cassette/wax cylinder so lots of nostalgia. It's also been a year of major expansion of my jazz collection which has been a lot of fun.
As well as these I would estimate about 10-20 CDs bought in charity shops - some eye-wateringly good bargains, the best of which was finding David Newton's Portrait of a Woman in near-perfect nick for £1 in The Red Cross shop.
So, that works out at about one a week, not counting borrowing from friends/library etc. More than I would have thought, if I'm honest.

Somewhere in the region of 400 CD's (all ripped to NAS), a few downloads and no LP's.
I keep them all, even the duds, which is why I can never find a particular one. Thank God for the triumvirate of Uniti2, NAS and dBpoweramp!
