Naim Streamer Update - Take a note of the MAC-address before the upgrade

Posted by: Goodsounds on 12 December 2013

I want to share my experience in upgrading Uniti2 from 3.17.0 to 3.22.003.

First step (Updating ARM code) was working successful.

Next step (Updating Streamer code) I got an error that "Update Failed(Communications failed)" Percent uploaded/installed: 0%

After "Checking connectivity to the product over network..." I got a pop up saying I should check connections under the product's Setup->Factory Settings->System Status->IP and enter the address

in order to proceed.

Unity display was showing "Streamer Update Please Wait" and I could not access the system.

So if you make a note of the MAC-address of the Uniti before the upgrade you could easily check on your router the related IP-address and proceed with the installation in such a case.

Thomas, your method may not always work for people, as it depends on the status of the ARP tables on the connected LAN equipment. (Layer 3 to 2 mapping tables).

At the stage of the update you describe the upload process requires the use of layer 2 discovery techniques so the uploader can find the Naim streaming hardware. At this point IP addresses have become meaningless and only layer 2 addresses (MAC addresses) are used.

This is one reason why Naim state a physical Ethernet wired connection is required between updater and Network player, since other methods such as wifi or PLA are not always  reliable enough or able to allow this discovery to work.
