Help with n-Stream?!
Posted by: MyNewUniti1+2 on 15 December 2013
We recently happily installed a brand new Naim Uniti2 in our house. We admit that we were initially impressed by the use of an iPad to control 'everything from every where'...but ours isn't doing as expected with music files.
We're actually experiencing serious problems with erratic transfer of the art work from CD albums: the initial transfer of cd files from PC to Windows media player OR iTunes seems ok most of the time (but NOT ALWAYS! Ex: it identifies 'unknown' files without reasons...); we choose to send/stock music files in a external hard drive (My Book Live).
But when we open n-Stream, the album's art work is represented by the ugly blue music note; the original art work will only show when we 'ask' Info!
What settings could be wrong??
Note that we contacted Apple/iTunes and they finally referred us to a Senior tech that wasn't able to help us... We are very disappointed...and quite desperate to find someone who will understand the problem and be able to help us fix it!
Thanks for reading...
... very frustrating because our dealer tells us that everyone of his numerous clients have the same setup and no problem at all.
Obviously if the same things happen with the other clients but no-one complains to the dealer then he's correct to say it. I've got the same "unknown" display but I've tagged the track names with the artist so the folder display gives the Album, track name display gives the artist & track. Copy the folder onto a USB mem stick, shove it in the Alfa Romeo stereo and it displays perfect there too.
Flac and other file types display correctly, it's just wav that has this feature! I'd much rather have best file format than most convenient (but with lower Q sound).
If you ripped your music to WAV file format, then you will be missing some of the metadata. This is why using FLAC is the more convenient option.
Sound quality wise, they should be identical, I thought I could hear a difference, then I did a blind listening test and I could not tell which was FLAC, WAV or AIFF. But that is another topic for another thread.
Some ripping software now does embed Metadata into Wav files. I can do it with XLD when ripping CDs, but that's a Mac OSX only program I believe.
Try ripping an album in FLAC (0 compression) format and see if that helps. And while you're at it listen to both WAV and FLAC and see if you can hear a difference… if you can, stick to WAV.
Guys, Nstream cares not about where the album art is. That is the job of your upnp server, and that will then send that image on its way to Nstream. Asset will for example uses embedded album art in the file and if not found then folder.jpg.

PS Dom TomLondon.. If you can hear a difference like many can, then the ideal is to store in a compressed format such as FLAC and then real time transcode with your upnp server to WAV for your Naim. The Naim then has less to do and for many that makes a worthwhile audible difference.

Nice answer Simon-in-Suffolk. What I discover today is that our uPNP server, WD My Book Live, seams to be the source of all problems encountered to date. The Twonky program has been changed by WD to lite version on the latest model of MBL and that causes uPNP server to be unable to see artwork at first and artist name along, when WAVE format is selected. Naim representative for our province of Quebec suggest to quit WD MBL and to move to a Synology product or something else; he also recommends to quit iTunes and use something else. I will get more information about all that tomorrow.

This is where the thread started. Glad you got there eventually
In french we say 'Better later than never' ('Mieux vaut tard que jamais') . At least we now have a better understanding of the whole process and what exactly is wrong in our set-up. Hopefully, we'll have Naim's representative specify exactly it's 'new' recommendations to our dealer tomorrow. We'll definitely say goodbye to this latest version of WDMBL...in hope of greater success with another product! Thanks for your interest and support!
I'm not so sure an understanding has been reached, if you check the forums other hardware can exhibit other or identical problems that you seem so anxious to avoid, for instance check the thread "n stream album display".
I should have been able to paste in the permalink to that thread above, but the iPad mini stubbornly refuses to do what the main PC allows. I need to work out why not chuck the iPad away!

Thank you for pointing that out; it's more true than ever that, thanks to internet, we're never alone with a problem.... What makes me hopeful that an understanding has been reached is that Naim's representative himself seems to be aware of problems of that nature, enough to say that they will make 'official recommendations' in...january... But our dealer's been pushed by us to solve the issu 'now' (everything worked fine in the store when we decided to buy...)! We'll see what he can do...
PNG files also work, possibly GIF but I have not tried any.
This really depends on your upnp server but "folder.jpg" is almost universal.
Synology are able to recognise the following by default:
cover.jpg;Cover.jpg;COVER.jpg;folder.jpg;Folder.jpg;FOLDER.jpg
... and you can even define what you want to be recognised.
Follow-up: WDMBL was exchanged...but the problems remained. Before returning it definitely and going ahead with the new, more costly recommendations, we'll be waiting for the visit of the dealer's techno guy...december 31st!
Some of you have have already mentioned was recommended: dBPowerAmp R14.4 cd-ripper (pick WAV or FLAC format), Asset UPnP audio server on PC, Synology NAS MODEL DS212J or DS213J with 3 TB disks (Seagate série NAS, WD red NAS, or others) and RAID1 for back-up...
Dealer's techno guy has come and as it seems WD has made some changes with the software into its My Book Live HD; the twonkie is no longer there and that's what cause all the troubles we have. It seemed impossible to the tech to find a patch on the internet. So now we are waiting after Naim provincial representative to give us official recommendations.
I had problems with my book live at first with artwork and albums disappearing for no reason. I carried out a full format and restore then reloaded using dbpoweramp being careful not to have artist names and album titles the same. Now it works fine.
No need to wait. Buy a Synology or Qnap nas, or a Vortexbox, and you will have a solution.
