Can't edit metadata
Posted by: Chris Bell on 23 December 2013
I have a dozen or so Unknown CDs I've ripped using my UnitiServe. I am unable to edit the Metadata on many of them and cannot properly label them. The screen grab below shows the "edit metadata" greyed out.
Advice welcome
Chris, can you not do it via n-Serve app?
I had one the other day that was an unknown CD which I tagged completely in n-Serve.
I tend to use that rather than DTC for retagging/relabelling, but Im a Windows user, looks like you might be on a MAC.
It is really easy to relabel everything in nServe, including the album and artist names, track names and genre, and you can add the album art too. As Mr Punch would say, 'that's the way to do it'.
I am using the nServe app. The frame grab above was taken from nServe.
In that case I'm baffled. My nServe looks nothing like that. If you select an album there is an edit button at the top right, just below the picture of the album. I hit edit and all the thinks you can change appear. I use it on an iPad, are you using something else?
Its nserve for OSX, I think everyone is referring to nServe for IOS
Yes OSX version. Appears to be a bug.
I just tried the iOS version of nServe and I am able to edit the metadata.
Thanks for the help.
I have a similar problem to what Chris had... But I can't edit the metadata of a few albums at all. Neither in n-Serve for OS X, nor in n-Serve for iOS!
Please don't tell me, that the music in the "Downloads" folder is treated like second class citizens, that can't be edited at all...

Hi Adrien,
"Second class citizen"...sort of!
As far as I know, you need to use the Desk Top Client (DTC) to edit any music in the 'downloads' folder, I don't think this can be achieved via the app.
Jason.
Hi Jason,
The DTC software exists only for Windows (and at home I never had and don't want that). For the Apple Operating Systems both softwares are named n-Serve, for iOS and for OS X.
Obviously the n-Serve for OS X does have some bugs (as Chris found out), and is lacking some important features, that are included in the DTC for Win (as you told me).
That's a bit frustrating, since all the albums in my downloads folder are CDs, that the naim server was not able to rip... I never ever had a single CD (from about 1K) that could not have been ripped on all of my Macs/OS X/iTunes versions and combinations since the first iPod came out in 2001!
So it took me much longer to find out how to do that manually, find the right parameters, rip them bit perfect with XLD, adding covers, copy them to the naim server,... and now I can't integrate them properly with the standard naim rips! Wrong genre, no cover, problems with special characters, eg. AC/DC not recognised, renamed as AC-DC, now it shows up as AC;DC, ect.)
I hope for a good n-Serve Update for Mac as soon as possible! Should have ALL features from DTC for Win and a few squashed bugs...
Why can't I %*&§ edit a post for only 15 minutes?! Anyway...
Basically what I discribed above: That is the job the naim server was supposed to do for me - now I am working for him!! I was looking for a professional music server that takes work out of my hand and helps me solving problems. This system feels to me like a tinkered puzzle of unripe tools that creates problems instead - and at a highend price!
It looks like the computer-side of these products is not up to the high-level standards of the audio-side that I am used to naim devices since more than 20 years. Even though the music servers are on the market since 2008.
Now as Mac user I feel quite like a second class citizen.
I to can't manually edit metadata in either via the desktop client, n-serve on my iPad or n-serve for Mac. I was able to get one track and the genre to update via iOS but it took five attempts but nothing else will update. On the desktop client always get a "server is busy" message. I have a UnitiServe SSD. ????
Cheers
Mack are you trying to edit metadata on tracks you used the uServe to rip from cd, or on tracks you added to your Share from another source?
I too am unable to edit metadata in the downloads folder. Like others who have posted here, I find even albums downloaded (in WAV format) from the NaimLabel website show up without the cover art. I have tried adding the image as 'folder.jpg' in the album folder under the downloads folder (using Windows Explorer) but I still see the basic 'naim' image. Last time I got round this by buying and downloading the FLAC version which shows up perfectly with the album picture.
I have read that these things are difficult with WAV files, but FLAC seems to work OK.
nServe doesn't offer an opportunity to edit files in the downloads folder.
I am using IOS, going to edit option for any album I am using the online lookup option which is adding now the correct song titles for some albums that were labelled say c012b22367 to the correct album and songs. Also incorrectly named albums are being corrected using the same online lookup option.
Album artwork that has the Naim default I am using change cover option at the top, Click this then use web search, hold your finger on the image you have searched and like for a couple of seconds and an open option appears. Open the image in the website it links to. Now hold and press down for another 2 seconds again that same image in the browser/site it originated from and it will ask to use image. Select this and the album art will appear and replace it.
Took me a few minutes to work it out but I am now changing all the errors online and it is working. This is changing CD rips that have either got wrong album titles/song names, non appearing album artwork and the odd cd that has nothing attached but letters and numbers.
This is in IOS v 7.04 on an iPhone 5 through u-Serve app.

I've only bought one hires download from Naim, and the album art did not work. I was told to edit the .png file into .jpg, which I eventually fathomed out how to do. I did this in the folder on my laptop in which the download was originally stored. As if by magic, the album art then appeared in nStream.
But what a faff! You pay £18, and then need to fiddle in the computer to make it work. It should just happen by itself, surely it can't be too hard. It's certainly put me off buying downloads, good as this one sounds.
I haven't had any issues from downloaded album art from purchases, the NAIM one I bought worked fine.
The Eagles 1972-1979 box set downloads has the albums individually set but uses one image for all the albums art, a black one with 1972-1979 Eagles on it, so using the change cover option I have replaced that with the actual album art for each one.
This is working for all the rips done through US that the metadata went wrong on or for album art I want to change over.

I tried to edit the .png file but was unable to find an application on my computer which allowed me to open it as .png and save it as .jpg. I might have another go at this by just replacing the .png file with .jpg. But as you say, it's a faff and, as others have reported on this forum, not all 24/192 downloads sound better than the 16/44.1 CD rip.

In what format did you download it? WAV or FLAC or other? I had no trouble with FLAC.
Clive, if you google png to jpg conversion, you'll find websites that do it for you. You upload the png, and a little while later you download the jpg, pop it into the folder and hey presto! My son tells be you can do it in Microsoft Paint as well, but I haven't tried it.

I will give it a go. That's another project you've set for me. Last week it was setting up track search in nStream.
And as for UnitiServe owners having better sex lives, you should try the NS01!
I can't believe you've still not got the tracks sorted out!

I looked at it in the DTC, even changed it from FALSE to TRUE then changed it back again because I recall someone had posted that it can freeze up your server and the thought of that gave me the jitters!
It worked for me just fine. It takes a little while to load in nStream, but there are 25,000 tracks, so that's to be expected. Give it a go.......

Bart,
These are UnitiServe ripped files.
UnitiServe ripped files may be edited with the DTC (Windows) or n-Serve (OS X). If you're getting an error message, something is amiss either with your uServe or the network. But it's straightforward. I find n-Serve on OS X particularly easy to use for this.
For Mac users, png is easily converted to jpg using Preview which is the OS X standard image viewer program. You "export" the png to jpg; Apple don't call it "convert," they call it "export."
