Unitilite ... I've come to a brick wall
Posted by: dap1 on 26 December 2013
Santa brought me what I asked for and after yesterday's initial headache of the naim rear connectors not being screw clamped like my dealer said they were ..I have sound ..... All good so far .
STREAMING ARGHHHHHH !!!!!!,
i am no bill gates can someone hold my hand here ... N stream is downloaded to my IPAD and IPHONE ... Nice green screens. ...
OH internet radios working fine .. Networks recognising my router blah di blah
when I press PC on the remote it's comes up with UPnP ( no servers ) ..... The screen on my iPhone has UPnP No servers. On my iPad it finds the uniti but ( says streamer not responding )
My IMAC Is on and iTunes is open ...... Using the 'remote app' on my iPhone that's controlling my library fine ..
it's all wireless ... day two I'm getting a bit frustrated ... so need some help please
thankyou
You need a upnp server to send music to the streamer, and to manage the music. It seems you are running a mac an no nas, so you need a server that can be installed on the Mac. This is the worst part of having a streamer unlike the Naim servers that have the server from the start, or the DACs where you just play music from your pc.

I was always under the assumption that I could stream music from my mac to my unitI .. Also I presumed I could just stream music to my uniti directly from my iPod / iPad ... Like a wireless speaker ... have I got this completely wrong ??
If you want to listen to music on your iPod you need to plug it into the USB socket on the front. The best way to use the Unitis is with the music on a server, streamed over Ethernet. It sounds way better than anything on an iPod.
HI just using a pc with itunes and playing the music through a usb dac seems to be want you actually wanted. However when you have the upnp server setup and working this is how you play your music. The problem is you need to setup the upnp server first.
The other thing sending the music to your streamer wirelessly is not possible at the moment. This is why you will find many threads where people are demanding Apple Airplay or something similar.
In the meantime you can plugg the iphone or I believe all newer apple devices into the usb on the front and play music in that way, not optimal sollution but a way to start maybe.
So a upnp server on your mac is the way to go.
Currently there seems to be 2 choices that most people like, J river or Acid. You can download and try j river for free in 30 days, but then you need to pay $49.
I have not used the app store on the Macs but you may also be able to download it there.
http://www.jriver.com/purchase.html
I used that link to check the Price, but you will find a lot of information on that site.

And the other alternative is Asset it helps to get my spelling right.
This is still in beta, and the link posted first in this thread still Works, the image can be downloaded from that link.

My guess is that j river is a safer option for the time being, but hopefully some of the people on this forum that are running a upnp server will start to post in this thread soon.

I was in your position just a few weeks ago - new to Naim, new to streaming, with an iMac etc.
i downloaded Playback from Yazsoft . With that running your Mac will be visible to your Naim streamer and away you go. I soon learned from the very helpful people here on the forum that the next step is to re-rip all of your CDs in a lossless format and store them on a NAS drive. Your Naim streamer is of such high quality that the difference between the AAC files on iTunes and music ripped to WAV or FLAC is very obvious. The other advantage of storing your music on a NAS is that you don't have to have your Mac switched on and awake all the time. I opted for a Vortexbox, basically a NAS with a built in optical drive. You will discover very quickly that this is all much simpler than it sounds and the results are wonderful. Good luck.

Hi Dap and Merry Christmas! You've got it completely wrong to the extent that you thought you could do those things using no additional software or hardware. Hopefully it was not the dealer who lead you astray.
The Uniti's main source over your home ethernet network is a UPnP server. You can install UPnP server software on your Mac and others have already mentioned some. But iTunes itself does not do this, nor anything else from Apple.
Playing directly from an iPhone or iPad is done with a direct (cable) connection to the front panel USB input on your Uniti. Wireless streaming directly over the home wi fi is not directly supported; the best solutions are to buy a Bluetooth music receiver or to use an Apple Airport Express if you want to avoid the cable connection.
Welcome!

Great post, and my experience exactly. You start slow, and go through a few iterations as you figure it all out. Not being tied to having your home computer running to hear music is a nice solution. That is a great reason to move to a dedicated music server (a nas, a Vortexbox, a UnitiServe, etc). Also music tends to accumulate quickly and you'll end up filling the hard drive of an iMac or Macbook pretty quickly if you love music.
A solution to stream wirelessly from the mac and other Idevices is to buy an airport Express, obvious since airplay is supported on all your iDevices.
To highjack the thread I am very interested in all information about a bluetooth receiver that can be used with Naim streamers or servers, something that can take the digital signal into the Ndac or USB on the servers. I have been searching online but it seems that most sollutions is both a receiver and a dac, and there are already 2 Dacs in my setup and that is enough, for sure 3 are too many.

Claus I think that the Rocketfish bluetooth music receiver does what you are looking for. It has an optical digital output as well as analogue outputs.
Naim family .. Thankyou all very much for your replies as I said I'm a bit behind the curve with streaming etc ... Things are a lot clearer now and I now know what I need to do.
It,s my fault I didn't ask the right questions when I auditioned it ... I am still very pleased with it ... Stunning piece of kit.
Thanks again
Another (free) UPnP server for Mac/Linux/Win would be "PS3 Media Server".
Don't mind the name, it works with all UPnP compatible devices, not only with the PS3...
https://www.macupdate.com/app/...399/ps3-media-server
History shows that the process of exploring random UPnP servers for OS X typically results in much hair-pulling-out, cursing, imbibing mass quantities of whisky, and then finally the purchase of a nas or Vortexbox or uServe.
YMMV
Bart, you are right!
But at least he can feed the compressed music to his new naim streaming device, while thinking about the next step: the right server for uncompressed music...
....and especially if you don't like paying for it .
Thx guys look like the NAS route will be the best way ... Any recommendations appreciated .. whilst I'm saving my pennies I,ll download one of the mentioned software app,s and see how I go with that .... some of these NAS have optical drives so that's a case of sitting down with my boxloads of cd,s ... if I went for one without I guess that's pretty straightforward file transfer ? Also how will my future purchases from iTunes find it way to the NAS drive I guess it runs background updates .
In my case as you can see N.A.S should stand for Not A Scoobydoo .... Clue
Downloaded Yazsoft playback software ( just while im thinking about how to sneak a NAS into the house without the wife seeing it ) ... seems to look ok ... my Uniti found my Imac and N-Stream showed my library .. even artwork etc so going in right direction ... Chose a song from my library via N-stream and nothing , it just reverts to saying .... DAP1,S IMAC 3 ... ... This rolls across the untilite screen and shows on my Nstream app ARGHHHHHHHH !!!!! ..... Think Bart was right about imbibing whiskey .... Off to dealers tomorrow with a notepad of questions .... any ideas on the software problem greatly appreciated .......
Vortexbox
Indeed! Is it my imagination or has the slim wide version been withdrawn? Uk website shows only the dumpy ones....
Slimmer the better .... have to hide it from the wife ... sorted software issue ... thku
