There are always people who rejoice in sucking the fun out of other people's lives, usually in the name of some higher goals like environment or public health.

Part of me wants to be the sort of person that says "hell yes, turn it up to 11 and sod them" but just because I love to hear my choice of music loud doesn't mean that I will enjoy yours. Before we moved to Australia we lived in suburban Southern England where the houses were generally small and close together. We had a neighbour who hosted 'Abba parties' every few weeks at window rattling levels. I think the idea that there may be a physical danger to health from other peoples loud music is pretty thin, but it can certainly be stressful and reduce quality of life. Damn, I'm getting old aren't I?

a good response from this topic, certain tracks i play need to played very loud and others don;t seem to demand such high volume, but at the back of my mind i do worry about my neighbours, sonically every hifi freak has to give it full throttle now and again ,otherwise i might as well have a cheap system.

What do you mean by "cats ears"?

Lugholes, one on either side of its head.. Most of the time our Moggy is in the lounge, same room as my kit. Bottom line is i just want a quite life as i drift into old age. If madam says TURN THE VOLUME DOWN i do as i am told, saves getting nagged at.

Once had a neighbor complain when I lived in Edinburgh in flats. So I invited her into the flat and told her that as long as someone in the block turned their washing machine on a 6am on a Sunday morning whilst I was recovering from a hangover there was no way I was going to turn my system volume down from 2 to zero. She never complained again as it was her that used the washing machine.

I have also invited neighbours into my flat to see the size of my speakers and warned them that if they turn their music up too loud then expect retribution. Never had a problem after I showed them what volume meant.

ewemon,

You'd do so well here in the US driving a pick-up truck with big wheels and a loud exhaust!

But on the flip-side, those guys always seem to be compensating for something?

Oh well, it's the Padded Cell .....

The only complaints I get about the volume are from the wife!

The neighbours kids had a full drum kit in their garage for about 18 months.

Bearing in mind I live in a semi detached house and their garage is adjacent to our lounge, it was a bit loud sometimes!

however my wife and I showed great restraint and didn't complain once.

We were sorely tempted though when they were bashing the skins on a Sunday afternoon when we were trying to watch TV. But we just went upstairs to watch TV in a back room.

Both the kids next door have now given up playing the drums.

I now have a Naim system.......

Happy days!

My neighbours never complain about my music: I have good taste!

Our son has a drum kit, has been playing for 8 years and has reached a very high standard. All the neighbours were told when we bought the first kit, we have never had any complaints. If anything he has had nothing but compliments about how good he is. As with any instrument if it is played well it stops being a noise.

Does that include the bagpipes?

I wish our neighbours kids had been as proficient as your son sounds, Iron Cobra, as it was painful listening at times.

But me and Mrs H were also young once. Gotta cut the youth some slack.

When my son was living at home it was always a pleasure to hear him play his guitar.

I've always thought the sound of bagpipes on a distant hill sound wonderful.....and the more distant the hill, the more wonderful the sound.

... , which reminds me of the time I was in my favourite record shop in Hereford - King's Radio - and came down from upstairs [the record department], and asked the sales asistent if he would not help me improve my appreciation of the massive Dynatron radiogram they were playing with some some dreadful pop-song.

I said,

"Would you wish to increase my enjoyment of this piece of music"

"Yes. of course."

"Please turn it down."

"Is that better, sir."

"Yes, better, but there is room for improvement. Please turn it off!"

Off it went!
