Unitiserve Backup and authentication

Posted by: rded on 30 December 2013

Hi All,

I finally installed my Synology  DS212J NAS. When I go to manage stores and set up a new store, it says:

Unable to promote share DISKTSTATION\Backups to music store.... Invalid operation 'Cannot Authenticate'.

Is there something I am missing here? Please help. Thanks

I don't think you can make a backup into a store, only vice versa.

Is that Backups folder on your Synology nas setup as a Shared Folder?  You have to create the folder using the Shared Folder creator in Control Panel.

Is the Backups folder's permissions set to allow all users to read and write?

Is the Windows workgroup name for you Synology set to NAIM?

Those are the first 3 things I think of to check.

Thanks for the Quick Reply.

Yes to All users for read/write

Yes to Workgroup name to NAIM

Not so sure about what you meant by the backup folder? I know I created a back folder called "Backup Folder" in the shared folder from the control panel. Not sure what I am missing here though.

I'd delete the store and start again. The serve will set three folders in the store (HQ, MQ, LQ) and it can't become a backup unless empty. This is the area I found most tricky with my Serve and Synology.

@hungryhalibut

Sorry, I am just not computer savvy. Not sure what you mean? What does MQ HQ and LQ mean?

So you want me to delete the shared folders on the synology?

I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computers. The serve has these three folders in it. MQ is medium quality, for Cd rips, LQ is low quality from mp3s, and HQ is for hi def stuff. When you created a share, the serve puts these folders in, which means it's no longer empty, and therefore it can't be a backup.

I'd set up a new backup via the Synology desktop called, say, newbackup (all lowercase, no spaces). Then turn it into a backup using the desktop client.

@hungryhalibut

Thanks. I will do just what you posted when I get home.

It could be that the shared folder does not work coz the file name has one capital letter- "Sharedfolder"?

Okey dokey. There is an old thread from 10 August, called Synology Question, which was when I had the exact issues you are now facing. I've just checked it out, and if you read through it will show you what to do - hopefully! You'll see that a good Rioja is required at a critical point in the process.......

Link please? :-)

Just type 'Synology question' into the search box - I don't know how to do links from my iPad. See - I really am dopey.

Ahh HH noticed that rded used the word "store."  Rded, this is a problem.  You can only turn an empty folder into a Backup location.  If you create a new folder on your Synology, and first make it a "store" then you are screwed -- delete that folder and start over.  I believe that is pointed out in the thread to which HH refers.

1.  Use the Shared Folders creator in the Synology Control Panel to create a new shared folder.  Do not put any spaces in the folder name!  And no funky characters.  Your name "Backup Folder" has a space in it, and this will be a problem.  Delete it and start over.

2.  Tell the UnitiServe to scan.  It will find that new empty shared folder.

3.  Tell the UnitiServe to make that new folder a Backup.

I use nServe for OS X to do all of this, and find it quite simple once you do the right steps in order.  Let us know how you make out!

@Bart,

Thanks! The shared folder's name does have a space so perhaps that is the issue.
