3.22 update help

Posted by: maze on 31 December 2013

When trying to update my 172 XS, select serial port to use nothing is showing in the drop down box. I have USB B mini from the 172 to USB on my PC.

Have I missed something here?

Help.

Did you thoroughly read the instructions? Missing the required software for the lead?

I had the same problem and realised I needed to download the driver for the USB. There is a link to it on the website. It then worked fine.

Yes I downloaded the driver, maybe I haven't completed the installation.

We'll I have unzipped the driver and installed successfully but still nothing showing in the drop down box. So now at a loss for how to proceed. Maybe reboot the PC and 172.

Maze, I have not yet updated to 3.22 but when I went from 3.17 to 3.21 I tried the update without installing the recommended driver, and got blank box. Going back and installing the driver gave me 4 options (as I have 4 USB ports scattered about on the PC). Of course there was no info on which USB was which on the motherboard or expansion slot cards but I luckily guessed right!

In short the driver is not installed correctly yet and you do not need to power up/down the NAC in order to get the connection established at this stage.

+1  The drivers have to be installed correctly to get the comm port to show up in the dropdown box.  But once done, there may be several comm ports showing up. It's just trial and error to pick the correct one unless you're a total computer geek and knew already which comm ports your computer was using prior to the install.

Thanks guys, problem is PC says software install successful, and next problem with install so not sure what's going on. Will persevere.

Well it's my first day back at work today. I downloaded the software update on my pc at my desk at work. Fine no problem and in the drop down box I have com 1 showing. Just need to find out which is com 1 and bring my 172 XS to work with me tomorrow and do the update.

Question, will I need to have my 172 connected to the internet? I would have thought as the software is on my pc that internet connection is not required, just the usb b lead from pc to 172.

I tried to update at home and obviously something not ok on my home pc.

Has anyone tried to install the drivers on a iMac running OS X Mavericks? I attempted it just before Christmas, but they weren't showing as installed, and couldn't see the comm port showing either.

This is the problem I have on my home PC, so will try at work taking my 172 into work with me.

I have tried several times to install the drivers at home with no luck, it's getting very tedious this update lark. There has surely got to be an easier route to upgrade.

Not on an iMac but on a MB Air (11" 2012) & Mavericks, drivers OK, update OK to ND5 XS, only took about forever to install...

I have had the same problem with iMac running OS X Mavericks.

I get a "successful installation" message for the USB bridge driver but whether you hot or cold boot, no serial port appears.

I have tried deleting the driver, re-downloading and even unzipped with Stuffit instead of Archive but no joy.

Steve Hopkins says he hasn't seen any problems but there obviously is one.

Any ideas?

Maybe Steve Hopkins can reply on this, as I have the same problem, so clearly there is a problem and it's getting rather tiring each time one wants to upgrade the software. My update is tried via PC though.

I was just about to try again via an old laptop with Windows XP in case the PC route was easier: it seems not.

I have emailed support about this but have not had a reply. Steve spent a lot of time on the phone with me yesterday but although he tried very hard to help, he couldn't find a solution.

This streaming business seems a very immature technology and although the sound quality is superb it really isn't a mainstream consumer product yet.

If I get a reply from Steve I'll let you know.

Success at last but in a roundabout fashion. My Belfast distributor, Wesley, couldn't load the drivers either when using his windows laptop. When he tried his desktop (sorry, I don't know processor or Windows version) he was successful and then upgraded my ND5 XS from his desktop when I brought it in.

I am also unsuccessful in loading the drivers on my Windows XP laptop - I get a successful installation message but no serial port either under the USB bus or a com port.

Can anyone make sense of this?

Hi Mr Maze,

I went to similar trouble to install Firmware version 3.22 on my NAC-N172XS. Like you, after running the download program on my Windows PC, when coming to the option 'Select port' the window does not show a COM port. Steven Hopkins from Naim recommended the website USBnow http://www.usbnow.co.uk/ but I could not find any driver there.

After that I downloaded and tried at least 3 drivers types (with PC reboot) before I got it to work. In the end the following driver worked fine with Windows 8.1:

http://www.silabs.com/products...ridgevcpdrivers.aspx

My advise:

  • Download and install a Virtual Com Port Driver (VCP Driver) on your Windows PC, which simulates a COM port on one of the USB ports. An example of a VCP driver can be found on : http://www.silabs.com/products...ridgevcpdrivers.aspx
  • Connect a cable with on one side a USB mini-B in the back of your Naim device, and on the other side a normal USB socket in one of the USB ports of your PC.
  • Start the Naim Download program applications and follow the instructions in the software.

Maze, did you manage to install 3.22 on your 172XS in the end?

Best regards,

Bert

Bert, no I didn't get to do the download. I managed to download the software on my PC at work, I could see the com port. As yet I haven't taken my 172 into work to install the upgrade.

I think I will try your advice here and see if I can do it your way, failing that I will disconnect the 172 and take it to work with me on a quiet day.

Many thanks.
