"Utterly gorgeous" was the immediate reaction from Ian Anderson, editor of fRoots magazine, to this disc by Quercus, the trio formed by legendary folksinger June Tabor (making her ECM debut here), Welsh jazz pianist and composer Huw Warren, and English saxophonist Iain Ballamy, well-known to ECM listeners as co-leader of the band Food. This is the first Quercus album but the trio, very much a collaborative band, has existed for several years, patiently developing its unique idiomatic blend.

1st play. Been looking forward to this.

Following their debut award-winning album Moonfire, Boy & Bear released Harlequin Dream, their bold and brave 2013 album recorded in their hometown of Sydney at legendary Alberts Studio and mixed by Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse). The lead single, "Southern Sun," has a powerful urgency not unlike the best of Bruce Springsteen or Fleetwood Mac, while a sprinkling of strings and brass brings life and color to such standouts as "Back down the Black," "Old Town Blues" and "Stranger." Boy & Bear's debut record Moonfire won five ARIA awards, including Album of the Year.

Moving Pictures

Streaming ripped FLAC. Always preferred the earlier albums but thought I'd give it another listen and it sounds completely different on the Qute. It really comes to life, especially Neil's drumming.

I think it is one of the few things we nearly all agree about, the superiority of the 2009 remasters.

I have even even decided not to rip the 1998 masters even though I have 4  versions of DSOTM ripped, 3 versions of a lot of Rory Gallagher's albums and 2 of most of Van's as there are the odd track that sounds better on some of the masters, but for the Betales, no contest.

Richard,

The SQ seems to improve with each play. If you want it get in quick before the price goes up, as it invariably does. Has your Keith Monks arrived yet?
