Disc 2 is all of his encore at his Carnegie Debut. Every one of the performance is highly charged electrifying. I wish I was there.

His Scarlatti K.9 (L.413) "Pastorale" has a great clarity and articulation yet quiet passages are handled with care. Not too frilly just the right amount of filigrees. He's a lot less friendlier than Horowitz or even Michelangelli. Light touch of keys reminds me of flickering lights. Beautifully nuanced key strokes and tonal colours yet I still have a greater affinity for a playful and more human Horowitz style of playing. Pletnev's Scarlatti is modern cool and it remains more engaging than many.

Hi Larry, not sure if you are on Facebook, but Sid Smith ran his 1st king crimson record club last Sunday, where he played ITCOTCK. If you are on FB just send Sid a request & he'll add you to the group. It was great fun, and there were some good insights into the making & history of the debut album. Don't know when the next 'Club' night will be, but I suspect Sid will run through the albums in order. He will let us know. Anyone else interested can ask if they wish.

These were the discussion ground rules...

Hello and welcome to the Facebook page of the King Crimson Record Club. The only bit of housekeeping I’d like to suggest is that we don’t fill this with youtube (et al) links to KC tracks and albums - we all know what they sound like. OK?  Let’s keep this a spam-free zone reserved for commenting only when we are live playing a disc.

Denis

Hello Denis,

Thank you for the information. Looks like I'm missing out on something I would really enjoy.  I'm not on Facebook, but I'm starting to believe resistance is futile.

Kind Regards,

Larry

On vinyl, when Richter is not being played.

Haim,

How is it?

Pollini's Beethoven No.28 Sonata. Not as funky as his later sonata, but actually there is a lot going on and playful than I remember. Thoughtful and sensibly played. Pollini leaves no ambiguity for sure.

I agree Bunbury, I started playing it again recently its a really good album and continues to grow.

What format do you two have? I love his first two LPs on vinyl and this one has been on my radar while digging second hand . Seems the vinyl is all but impossible to find at a rational price.

Stax Story

... a library loan CD.

The legendary Memphis soul label Stax's legacy is well-represented by this four-CD box set, which manages to do what many similar box retrospectives don't. That is to provide a well-balanced overview of a genre of music that mixes the essential hits with many noteworthy yet lesser-known singles and rarities, coming about as close as possible to pleasing both the collector and the less intense soul fan.

osprey,

I hope that Booker T & the MGs and his Hammond are somewhere on that CD.

Randy, there are a few tracks from them included in this set. That Hammond sound really is something, isn't it. I have a couple of other CDs which have more of it.

osprey,

I have just one of Booker T's LPs but should try to find more. I happened to hear him play live on a local Seattle radio station while driving to work last summer. Nice! I was hoping to find a link for you to the radio broadcast, but all I can find are photos of the event. It's KJR 95.7 FM Seattle if you care to search for more. Here's one nice photo from the event. 8 AM and he looks very bright. The local DJs were enthralled by his music as well as his personal charm. So was I.

Thanks, I'll have a look.

The Heptones...arrived today, another great reggae album for under a tenner!

There is some real good reissues from the great 1970s/80s reggae era from Greensleeves in particular.

There was a very interesting BBC Radio 4 doc on looped music earlier today, which prompted me to get this out:

Thought I would give this a spin after all the activity on here recently. Very nice relaxing Saturday morning music - (2006) Vinyl.

All the talk of The Yes Album (the only record of theirs I really like)  on another thread has prompted me to investigate this 2003 Rhino 180g repress, which sounds fine to me...

I agree, Kevin. The Rhino remasters are a good job and in the case of 'The Yes Album' I prefer the Rhino remastered CD (played through the NDS) to my original vinyl copy.
