A reviewer elsewhere described this as "an undiscovered gem of rock". I think he goes too far but it is cracking album when in the mood. A collaboration between Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and former Deep Purple vocalist Glenn Hughes released in 2005

Hi ewemon,

I didn't realize they had a new album out.  How does it compare with the rest of their catalogue?  Recommended?

Thanks,

Pat

Pat it came out in Oct and I never got around to listening to it so that is why I didn't post it earlier. It was sitting in amongst a pile of discs on my floor that I haven't gotten around to playing. It's a good album with a couple of trax I ain't sure about. However the last couple of theirs have needed repeated listens for me to get into them and this one I don't think will be any different.

Why? Because I haven't listened to it in years. I seem to remember it as being laid back as was all their music, and indeed it is.

Time for a wee drop of the 12 year old Glenkinchie to accompany it.

Ewemon,

I hear ya.  Still working through some I bought several months ago as well.  Thanks for your impressions; adding to the list.

New LP Cosmic Creation comes out on 10th Jan from Rune Grammofon. Only 100 copies to be pressed and comes in brown bag as with this great Solidification set. Apparently in similar vein to Strjon and should be a good companion.

Also worth checking out Arve as sideman on Arild Andersen Electra - he is mustard on that record.

Hi Mr Click, thanks very much for the heads up. I've just ordered a copy.

The DVD, again the visuals make up for the slightly poorer sound quality

I really like it to the extent that I prefer it over all their other work to date. I think I can understand why you might "struggle" with it. I often enjoy slightly off key or discordant music is that why you don't get on with it?

No I usually enjoy the very same for example Deerhoof are one of my favorite bands and they don't come much more off key or discordant. perhaps if I came to it first rather than last in the order of their work. who knows. I will give it another go tomorrow as it's in the car anyway. all the best

As you say, maybe coming to it last is what made it difficult. Anyway I hope that you will get to enjoy it in the car. I often leave CDs (that I have difficulty getting on with) churning around in the car's CD. The good ones (to me) eventually click and start going around in my head and  get promoted to the house!

How are you liking your Cisco reissue?

It is my favorite of the copies I have. I have the MOFI and a recent Japan reissue.

It's been a while since I listened to the Aja but recently someone sent me the link to Fremer's claiming that later Steely Dan/Greatest Hits US pressing sounds better than both the Cisco and original issue.

That *rumor* has been around for a few years and actually I bought the Greatest Hits LP a long time ago to compare but never bothered to listened to it. For one thing it's remastered by different engineer so I'd expect it would sound different.

I agree that the original MOFI Aja pressing was poor with that lumpy pondering bass with smilely EQ.

Anyways, I am going to compare them when I am feeling up for a repetitive listening of *PEG*
