This new release has very quickly wormed its way into my affections.

Ukrainian emigré Ark Ovrutski s ZOHO debut 44:33 titled for its running time is an instrumental jazz quintet recording featuring six originals and the jazz classic Milestones, by Miles Davis.

Ark Ovrutski is unique in that he has been a lifelong active participant of the jazz scenes in Russia, Ukraine, and New York City, while also being a frequent collaborator with Brazilian master drummer Duduka Da Fonseca.

On 44:33, Ark's sidemen include multi-reedist Michael Thomas, trombonist Michael Dease, pianist David Berkman, and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., all players from the top echelon of New York s abundance of talented jazzers.

A fairly safe album for octogenarian Moody but, in jazz, as in life, to break the rules, you have to know what those rules are and be able to follow them; only then does deviation become an art form.
