Great album!
Haim,
How do you do it? I have been looking for this for the last year and cannot find it unless one is willing to pay silly money. I also have the Goldbergs and other Bach works on order for at least 3 or 4 months and I doubt it will ever ship. I have listened to this same youtube of this probably a half dozen times already including tonight. Thanks for the reminder.
Doug,
I don't have any of Maria Tipo's music. I was listening to her Youtube Bach Partitas on the Mac. Why is your order taking three months to arrive?

Try to get onto Qobuz.com

Thanks, Aleg. I understand that it is a site for downloads. My fourteen years old Naim player is my only digital source. In the meantime I ordered one of her more available discs.

On vinyl.

Neil Young. After The Gold Rush. On HDCD from 2009, original release 1970.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Live At The Fillmore East 1970. On HDCD from 2006.

Liszt's B minor Sonata isn't exactly my favourite. But this particular '49 live recording of Horowitz recital finally made me sit up and listen to what's going on.
Horowitz made 3 recordings of the B minor Sonata. This middle period performance with Horowitz in absolute prime is more contemplative yet bolder and daring than his earlier studio recording. ( 1932 Abbey Road ) No doubt that he's very much aware of entertaining the audience. Slow passages are rendered with a fewer words with rubato. He sure knows how to generate excitement. There's a lot more sculpting/styling for dramatic effects going on.
The soundwise tho, this is a direct lift from the 78s and this was originally recorded by Carnegie's recording company for Horowitz' own private use. Restoration engineer made a conscious decision not to over do the clean up to preserve the life and tone of Horowitz's piano. So, high hiss noise in the background throughout but the piano remains relatively undistorted. Piano stands bold, upfront and clear. Audience noise is heard in the background, too with loud hacking and coughing. Amazing that the recording captured the tremendous dynamics of Horowitz playing in spite all these noise.
An accompanying Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is Horowitz's own transcription. I got the feeling this is a perfect vehicle for Horowitz to paint his imagination.
A lot less *dark* than Richter's Live at Sofia ( Columbia Masterworks ML 5600 ). There is no sinister plot. There is no feeling of the Judgement Day. But there is a vivid directness about Horowitz playing that is very likable.

I am enjoying the piano sonatas section, was a very good buy decision:

Bill Deasy "The Miles" (cd rip to iTunes)

Josh Rouse "The Best Of The Rykodisc Years"
(cd rip to iTunes) disc 2
as comparison, I was a bit too harsh when I first commented this set..., it's perhaps not a reference one, but it's quite enjoyable at the same time...

On Vinyl:-

30th Anniversary Edition

Elliott Smith "New Moon" disc 1
(cd rip to iTunes)

David Gray "Life In Slow Motion" (cd rip to iTunes)
I have been playing 'Pieces of a Man' Gil Scott-Heron's début studio album from 1971 all week. Its a fabulous reissue with excellent SQ. If you like Jazz Funk I can highly recommend it.... ![]()

If needed you can always burn the downloads on a CD and play from CD.

Duane Eddy - Road Trip [2011] - CD

Produced & mixed by Richard Hawley at Yellow Arch Studios Sheffield. Thoroughly Eddy yet strangely like a Hawley album with the vocals removed.

Mindy Smith "Mindy Smith" (iTunes download)
