Hi Clive

I really don't know much about her music.  Had this disc from the library once, have one 10,000 Maniacs album, and now this again amongst others on Spotify.  I like her voice and hope to explore her catalogue deeper as time allows.

good listenin'

She has an unusual, but appealing, voice although she frequently slurs words. I think I have all her solo releases and would strongly recommend 'Tigerlily' which is her most frequently played here. That said, they're all worth exploring. Enjoy the journey.

And she puts on a great live show.

Haim,

I'm not really sure the reason for the delay or difficultly?  There just seems to be a general shortage of anything recorded by Maria Tipo save one or two.  Just cannot find the Partitas anywhere and the 2cd Goldberg with other works I ordered may or may not come.  I've experienced this before where after maybe 6 months or something Amazon will just cancel the order saying it is unavailable.

What's everyone's take on her?

Kuma,

Maybe not for everyone, especially those with very rigid views of music and / or Bach.  I find her playing very musical and this is what attracts me.  Stylistically, very much her own and again I come with the expectation that everyone should be bringing their own personality to the table.  So I like her and I first became really aware of her late last year.  I have really only been listening to her Partitas while I struggle and wait to find more of her other recordings.

Doug,

My guess is that Amazon is just trying for safety reasons to slow down the flood of music arriving at your doorsteps.

Franz Liszt:  Valentina Lisitsa (Piano)

Ellens Gesang (Schubert) "Ave Maria" for Piano, S 558 no 12
Ballade for Piano no 2 in B minor, S 171
Aida: Danza sacra e duetto finale, S436
Rondeau fantastique sur un thème espagnol, S 252 "El contrabandista"
Winterreise (Schubert) for Piano, S 561: no 1, Gute Nacht
Des Mädchens Klage (Schubert) for Piano, S 563 no 2
Erlkönig (Schubert) for Piano, S 558 no 4
Der Müller und der Bach (Schubert) for Piano, S 565 no 2
Hungarian Rhapsodies (19) for Piano, S 244: no 12 in C sharp minor

Franz Liszt - one of the most important figures in the musical world (in my opinion) and sadly, probably one of the most misunderstood with many misguided stereotypes placed on him based on poor examples of interpretations or just ill-informed people carrying on the mudslinging.

I have the Lisitsa on CD and vinyl and am reporting only on the CD which I find the better recording (the vinyl is another story in itself).  I believe the CD and the Vinyl are individual takes as well.  What I do like about the albums is the program.  I like programs that stray away largely from the popular war horses as there is so much in Liszt to choose from and most listeners are not even aware of.

In general, Lisitsa is very talented and has an unlimited technique it seems.  Sometime I feel a slight coldness or indifference in her playing but this is just her style.  So it works better or worse depending on the piece and expectations of the listener.  Occasionally she may over-pedal and sometimes I find the Boesendorfer sound not to my liking but it is all good in the end though.

As a stranger I arrived
As a stranger I shall leave

The Schubert lieder transcriptions are to die for too.  Besides just the quality of Liszt's musical output what every pianist has to really thank him for is bringing music to an individual through his transcriptions.  It is not every day that a pianist has a singer to share Schubert lieder with or a pipe organ in your home or a fully stocked opera hall at your disposal.  It is priceless to be able to experience this same music in solitude right in your own home.

Shear ecstasy - you need the beginning and you need the ending for understanding and context but everything is summed up in the climax between around 7:35s and over by 8:10s.  A good example of how Lisitsa is perfectly gifted like so very few are technically to play this music but remains somewhat distant to the music emotionally.  This is all just subjective and personal style and opinion.  I mean, the music certainly still does speak for itself but every personality (mine in this case) wants it there own way.  In sections like this there is so much more one can do to relay emotion.  Right around the 8' mark, at the very height even a small delay, or change of dynamic or some body language to make us feel you are more invested in this story.  I mean, the cameramen should have been laying on floor smitten with grief at this point.  The music, the story behind them - simply incredible music to experience.
