A reminder of when I saw Tull perform this live (a long time ago...)

The somewhat unconventional Ry Cooder. The music might be light-hearted but his lyrics often contain serious intent.

Great music from the period that made "The Edge" the station it is now.  When they were the station that broke alternative rock before the others got on the bandwagon.  Just great music from the 80's and early 90's.

Tony, you should try "West", the album before. Even better!

Goldfrapp - Tales of Us

Goldfrapp - Tales of Us. Because it's my favourite album at the moment. Magical vocals with simple and subtle (for the most part) accompanyment. 24bit 96kHz WAV streamed. Followed by ...

The Gloaming - The Gloaming

The Gloaming - The Gloaming. A well arranged and interesting collection of slightly different folky stuff. Keeping with the relaxing atmosphere of the previous album. A Society of Sound download from a couple of months ago. Streaming 24bit, 48kHz.

Sergei Prokofiev:  Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (Piano), Gianandrea Noseda

Concerto for Piano no 1 in D flat major, Op. 10
Concerto for Piano no 2 in G minor, Op. 16
Concerto for Piano no 3 in C major, Op. 26
Concerto for Piano left hand no 4 in B flat major, Op. 53
Concerto for Piano no 5 in G major, Op. 55

A middle of the road recording.  I honestly was expecting a better quality recording from Chandos.  This was the let-down for me only.

Gabriel Fauré:  Kun-Woo Paik (Piano)

Romances sans paroles in A flat major, Op. 17, no. 3
Nocturne no 1 in E flat minor, Op. 33 no 1
Nocturne no 3 in A flat major, Op. 33 no 3
Impromptu no 2 in F minor, Op. 31
Nocturne no 6 in D flat major, Op. 63
Barcarolle no 1 in A minor, Op. 26
Nocturne no 11 in F sharp minor, Op. 104 no 1
Nocturne no 13 in B minor, Op. 119
Improvisation in C sharp minor, Pièces brèves, Op. 84: no 5,
Romances sans paroles in A flat major , Op. 17: no 1
Prelude in C sharp minor, Op. 103: no 2
Preludes (9) for Piano, Op. 103: no 7 in A major
Ballade in F sharp major, Op. 19

Some (or maybe most) musicians tend to play as if they are there only to put on a big performance for an audience.  In some ways this reminds me of a woman who smears too much makeup on to create some phoney air.  They give the appearance of showing something that they are not and their is nothing really behind the facade.

Kun Woo Paik does not belong to this phoney league.  His playing is humble and from the heart; he plays with the same passion whether playing for himself or even one listener.  Here is a wonderful Fauré reading that is restrained and self-effacing with slower tempos that calls one to feel the music more intimately.  This is how I like to play this in my own home in low light and in the quiet of the night.  A very nice recording for me.

Franz Liszt:  Jean Muller (piano)

Liebestraum no. 3, S541: No. 3. Nocturne in A flat major

Valse de l'opera Faust de Gounod, S407

Trube Wolken (Nuages gris), S199

Valse-impromptu, S213

Annees de pelerinage, 2nd year, Italy, S161 No. 5. Sonetto 104 del Petrarca
Consolations, S172: No. 3 in D flat major: Lento placido
Mozart - Reminiscences de Don Juan, S418
12 Etudes d'execution transcendante, S139: No. 11 in D flat major, "Harmonies du soir"
12 Lieder von Schubert, S558: No. 7. Fruhlingsglaube

This is an excellent recital and I liked this very much..  Muller has chosen a nice mix from the different periods throughout Liszt's life but the selections mostly favour very popular, well known pieces.  His playing is very strong ranging from delicate (Consolation to the forwarding thinking Nuages gris) and very clear to commanding and full of verve and character.  Probably the centre piece of this disc is the Reminiscences de Don Juan of Mozart.  Depending on your viewpoint this is either a pianistic dream (to listen to) or a pianistic nightmare (to play)-only playable by a handful of musicians.   Muller takes us with ease through the famous "Là ci darem la mano" episode through to the devilishly furious Presto-Air Fin ch'han dal vino from Don Giovanni.

John Renbourn Group - Enchanted Garden

John Renbourn Group - Enchanted Garden. Because 'The Maid on the Shore' has been going around and around in my head since last night. And because it is a brilliant album with John Renbourn's guitar prowess on show.

I remember quite a few years ago going to see him at Burnley Mechanics with a mate who wasn't particularly interested (anything for a night out was his mantra). We got into the hall and sat down and my mate started to read a magazine he'd brought with him. Anyway he kept reading as John came onto the stage and stared playing. About half way through the first song he looks up and says with disbelief "How many people are on stage?" Needless to say he then put his magazine down and started to take notice.

Hi, Kev.

I  streamed West, Back to Land and Dos earlier on  and you're right,

West is the best of  the lot. Very interesting band and one which I can hear hours on end without getting fatigued. Have ordered West and Back to Land.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Tony
